My hero is animals, but the particular animal I’m talking about is a certain dog. Dogs are caring, smart and brave and I think they can tell when something is wrong. I have a dog, a chocolate lab named Lace. One day my dad went out to feed her and she was barking and growling. In the wink of an eye, a copperhead snake came out of the bush and started coming up to my dad and before the snake could get to him Lace pushed him out of the way. I have a few more stories to tell of why I think dogs are heroes.

Bo, a Labrador retriever, was rafting with a puppy named Dutchess and their owner Laurie and Bob Roberts, when an eight-foot wave flipped the raft over. The wave threw the dogs and their owners over the raft. Bob and Dutchess were free but Laurie and Bo were trapped under the raft. Bo finally got free but then he dived back under the water and pulled Laurie by the hair until she was free, then she grabbed Bo’s tail and the dog pulled her across the strong current to shore where she was safe.

In Northern California a bad earthquake hit. After the first jolt Reona, a two and a half year old Rottweiler owned by Jim Patton, heard screams from across the street. Reona ran out the door and did something she had never done before - she jumped three fences and went into a house where five year old Vivian Cooper was. The terrified child was standing in the kitchen and Reona pushed the girl against the cabinets and sat on her. Then, just seconds later a big microwave oven on top of the refrigerator came falling down where the little girl had been standing.

In New Mexico Betty Shouder was sleeping when her nine year old Weimaraner, Willy, woke her up but she couldn’t seem to wake up but Willy insisted that she get up and when she finally woke up she felt dizzy and she noticed Willy was weaving the air.

Leo is a four year old standard poodle from Texas who was playing with his eleven year old owner Sean Callahan Sean’s nine year old sister Erin. The two kids found a five and a half foot diamond back rattlesnake. Leo got in between the two girls and the snake and fought it off and his two owners were able to get away ok but Leo got bit in the head six times but he survived.

These are some examples of why dogs are my hero because they will do just about anything to save someone they love or even someone they don’t know, like they did in these stories.
