by Madeleine and Gemma

"A lighthouse of sanity in a universy of madness and suffering"

Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop was born in Wangaratta Victoria in 1907. He was a great war veteran. He healed many wounded soldiers. After a good life he died at 86 in 1993.He worked as an AIF Medical Officer travelling all over the world nourishing the wounded soldiers from war. With a friendly attitude and simple way of life 'Weary' was classed as a stereotype Aussie.

Weary, as he was most commonly known, was captured by the Japanese in March 1942. He was imprisoned to build a wall for the Japanese between Burma to Siam, on the railroad. He worked continuoussly. Once, Weary was bashed and beaten until eventually his head cracked open. The gaurd who overpowered him left him to welt in the sun. Gradually Weary lost feeling in his legs. When finally released he slowly got to his feet and said:"If you'll escuse me, I shall amputate the dutchman's arm who has been waiting all day! Determined to save the dutchman he hobbled to his operating table in the prison camp.

Dunlop healed many wounded soldiers. He was out going and always fought on, most of the time putting at risk to save others. 'Weary' was also a railway surgeon and one of the best at that. He helped over one thousand people and never boasted about himself.

Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop had many heroic traits and was very special. He contributed many things to humanity.'Weary' was understanding and respectful of others. He was reliable to come back to the operating table and to do what he loved so passionateley. He was determined to be loyal, showing a strength of character, being courageous and selfless. Inspiring so many by his way, he was responsible and knowledgeable in his action.

In summary 'Weary' showed to be a true Australian, helping war heroes all around the world, proving that there is always someone out there to give a helping hand. 'Weary' gave all and we class him as a hero because he was such a dedicated man.
