Sir Elton Hercules John

by Kristy from San Diego

"We live in an age, in an era where there is so much negativity, there is so much violence in the world, there is so much unrest and people are at war, that I wanted to promote the word love and red signifies love."(Elton John)

"I am the most well-known homosexual in the world." (Elton John) You know Sir Elton Hercules John wasn't always "Elton John" in fact that's not even his real name. Reginald Kenneth Dwight "Elton John" was born March 25, 1947 in Middlesex UK, to Stanley and Sheila Dwight. Sir Elton John won a scholarship to the London's Royal of music. Early on in his career Elton had answer an ad for songwriters; Liberty Records. Also answering the ad, Bernie Taupan, the two worked together as well as wrote commercial jingles. Eventually John and Taupan had begun to write their own songs; love ballads mostly. When John had worked with Taupan it only took him 2 days to write all the songs for a whole album. In 1976 John came out as Bisexual in an interview with Rolling Stones. In 1984 he married Renate Blauel. Although in 1988, they divorced. He is currently married to David Furnish and they have two kids Zachery and Elijah. In 1987 he sought treatment for drug and alcohol abuse clean and sober since. Elton John was totally shocked to have been asked if he was gay he thought everyone knew. He was living with his manager and was openly gay outside; not hiding it in anyway. He thought it was common knowledge. Not only is Elton John an amazing artist but Elton John is a hero, he is an amazing advocate for equal rights and he has been a remarkable man in the fight against AIDS being a humanitarian.

Sir Elton John is one of the most crazy, easy going, free-spirited men out there, but when it comes to equal rights he gets serious and fights. Elton John's life was the same as everyone one else's though he had some differences he has had to deal with. Regardless he feels that his life is the same. "As a gay man, I think I have it all: I have a wonderful career, I have my health, I have a partner of 17 years, and I have a son," he said. "But I don't have the respect of the church or politicians who say I'm less worthy because I'm gay." (Elton John) Even though he is gay, his life is no different than any straight person. Though some people don't agree with the notion that it isn't a choice and that it is normal. Many people agree with the effort that John has put in the fight for equal rights. John feels that everyone deserves the right to get married. Even if some feel it's wrong. Sir Elton John was always for love, for everyone, forever and for always, no matter what. "His message, he said, was: 'Everyone deserves compassion. Everyone deserves dignity. Everyone, everyone, deserves love." (Elton John) Everyone is deserving of life and love. The sad thing is not everyone is getting it. This is why Sir Elton John has been helping people fight. Equal right it's believed by many that everyone has them. But John knows otherwise. John believes that no matter sex, race, sexual orientation, gender orientation, looks, mental, or physical disability, deserves equal rights. Sir Elton John has been and still is an amazing man for his contributions to the fight against hate, the fight for equal rights of the LGBTQ community.

Elton John wasn't only just there for the fight for equal rights, he was there in the fight against AIDS. Many of his close friends have died because of this epidemic, including Freddie Mercury and American Teenager Ryan White. Sitting with White till the disease took his life, and helping fighting for this disease makes him an amazing humanitarian. Elton John sat by American teenager Ryan White during his last moments. Then twenty years later he writes a letter to him, wishing he could see the change. "Twenty years ago this month, you died of AIDS. I would gladly give my fame and fortune if only I could have one more conversation with you, the friend who changed my life as well as the lives of millions living with HIV. Instead, I have written you this letter." (Elton John) Even though Ryan White has been dead for more than twenty years Elton still feels as if Ryan has recently died. He wishes he could talk to him and tell him how much the world has changed and how much improvement on how people view AIDS and HIV. He doesn't believe Ryan should have died with the stigma against him. Elton John doesn't just only think of the medical cure for AIDS he thinks about the mental, emotional part too."This is a disease that must be cured not by a miraculous vaccine, but by changing hearts and minds, and through a collective effort to break down social barriers and to build bridges of compassion," John said. (E. John. T. Reuters) People in the world have many misapprehensions about AIDS, and the people that have it. John says that if he can break the misconceptions about AIDS, then the new found compassion and understanding, will help people overcome the AIDS epidemic and the fear that comes with it. Elton John has been there for AIDS and hasn't stopped in his fight. Elton John AIDS Foundation is still running today. This is another reason Elton John is an astonishing hero.

"Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours."(Elton John) Elton John has had his ups and downs in his life. The downs being the drugs losing friends and not having the same rights the ups being finding his true love in David Furnish and helping many people with his music. But even still he has given his time and money to help people. He fights for the right of him and many others; he also sat by Ryan White as he died. Elton John fights for equal rights and is a humanitarian.
