A hero is an ordinary person that did extraordinary things. A true hero is really never a hero at all; at least not in their own mind. Ellen Johnson is a hero because of her efforts in focusing to restore basic services, such as water and electricity, to the capital of Monrovia. I choose Ellen Johnson because she is an inspiration to me because of the things she went to just to become what she is now. The fact that she is still living and not letting anything or anyone stand in her way. Her becoming the first African woman, whose ancestry is African American, to be running for president in Liberia. And after a while look at where she is now: the first black woman president, who defeated her opponent George Manneh Weah in the November, 2005 Liberian presidential election.
When Ellen Johnson was in college she studied economics and accounting from 1948 to 1955 at the College of West Africa in Monrovia. She was married to James Sirleaf when she was only 17 years old, and then traveled to America in 1961 to continue her studies at the University of Colorado where she eventually earned a degree. Johnson-Sirleaf then read economics at Harvard from 1969 to 1971, gaining a Masters Degree in public administration. She then returned to her home country of Liberia to work under the government of William Tolbert. Mrs. Sirleaf is the mother of four boys and has eight grandchildren.

After she finished college she became the president of Monrovia. As you know the story of how she became the president. I told you a lot of things about. Because she is the first black women to become president of Monrovia. She has kids and grandchildren. So right now her future is heading in the right direction. She is a great person from what I had read about so far about her. I think she will be a good president for Monrovia and their people.
Some interesting facts about Ellen Johnson are almost everything about her. She became involved in government when she became Finance Minister in President William Tolbert's administration in 1970. She went to jail, sentenced for ten years for going against military, but she was let go early. She initially supported Charles Taylor's rebellion against Doe, she later went on to against him, and ran against him in the 1997 presidential elections. She managed only 10% of the votes, as to Taylor's 75%. Taylor charged her with treason. She campaigned for the removal of President Taylor from office, playing an active and supportive role in the transitional government, as the country prepared itself for the 2005 elections. With Taylor's departure, she returned to take over the leadership of the Unity Party.
Know you know why I picked Ellen Johnson – Sirleaf. I told you a lot of facts about her. I told you about her and some interesting facts about her. I told you what a hero was. I also told you why she was my hero. Thank you for reading my paper. I hope I told you a lot of things that were interesting to you. Like her going to jail and going to college. Her great things she did to be where she is at now. Like becoming the first black female to become president of Monrovia.
