Though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil (Psalm 23:4). Eminem feared no evil as he fought through the hardships of life, in pursuit of his life-long dream of becoming a musical phenomenon. Marshall Bruce Mathers III or more commonly known as Eminem (or Slim Shady) was born October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and is one of the few white artists to make a successful career in Hip Hop and Rap, which is a mostly black dominated profession. Eminem is often acknowledged for his rhyming skills, offbeat humor, and social satire. Eminem decided to make a name for himself originally in 1997 when he came with his first ever album "Infinite". He got the name "Eminem" in high school which he originally spelled "M&M" which were his initials and later adapted the name Eminem. And it would soon be the name of one of the greatest musicians in history, as well as a living example that no matter what your background is, as long as you persevere, work hard and follow your dreams, that anything is possible.

Eminem was born into a broken home. He had a 15 year old mother and his father was 19 and walked out on them when Mathers was only a few months old. His mother was also jobless. There were many times the Mathers family was homeless and had to live with family members or friends. Because of his mother, Marshall was constantly moving back and forth from Michigan to Missouri trying to find a job. They eventually settled in Detroit when Marshall was 12. Because of the constant moving, Marshall had a hard time making friends so he found a refuge in rap music. When he was older he was known locally as the white boy who was able to out "rap" anybody. He unfortunately though had a one year old daughter that he needed to provide for and he was jobless and was broke so he moved to a sign of desperation. "On the night of October 19, 1997, He was given a chance to prove himself in the Rap Olympics. The winner would win a mere $500 and an imitation Rolex watch. But Eminem's financial situation had grown so desperate, even such a meager prize, meant everything to him" (http://www.biography.com/articles/Eminem--9542093) (video). Eminem won this competition and it opened up many opportunities. He was invited to other competitions until he caught the attention of his, soon to be, mentor and best friend; Dr. Dre.

It seemed like Eminem was insane. Eminem was constantly being beat up for his actions. From wearing an Africa medallion to the mall in Detroit, to wanting to be a rapper when he was white. And yet he still acted the way he did. He was hated and discriminated against and still rapped. Even his style was a reason for discrimination, but later in life he would be "Praised for his rhyming skills, offbeat humor, and social satire." (World book online). Which he was. Many of his songs have examples of his crude humor. In almost all of his songs he shows his unique ways with words and, music. It's because of this that he became so famous, because he says things that even the hardcore rappers would be afraid to say and Eminem faces it head on and which is why he is one of the most respected artists of the generation.

Through hard work, determination and raw talent; Eminem fulfilled his dreams of becoming a hip hop artist. He came from nothing and has earned everything. And he isn't close to being done. Eminem is an inspiration because he and his life prove that anything is possible and you can have anything you want. As long as you're willing to work for it. He started at rock bottom, so all he had to go was up. He aimed for the Moon; he missed but he found himself among the stars...
