"I'd rather be the shortest player in the majors than the tallest player in the minors." - Freddie Patek (1973)

Freddie Patek was a Great hero and you will see why in the following paragraphs. He was a very short person especially for a Pro Baseball Player! Freddie was only 5'5" tall. This is one reason he is my hero.

He was a Major League player who played from June 3, 1968 in his first game, to his last game on October 3, 1981. He made it into the big leagues when he was 23 years old. He was born on October 9, 1944 in Seguin, TX. Patek was a right handed thrower and batter . Some of the nicknames he used to be called were, "The Flea" "Freddie" and "Fred."

The teams he played for were the Pirates, Royals, and the Angels. The first team he played for was the Pirates. The second team he played for was the Royals. Finally the last team he played for was the Angels. One of my favorite teams he played for was the Kansas City Royals. In 1971 Freddie was voted Kansas City Royals Player of the Year.

Freddie Patek has inspired me because of his height and his passion to play the sport he loved in spite of his being the smallest player. That really speaks to me because I am one of the shortest players on my volleyball team and that doesn't stop me from playing. It didn't stop Freddie either.

To conclude, these are the reasons why Freddie Patek is a great hero and why he is mine! He was a very valuable player to all the teams he played for and is still remembered and always will be.
