by Jacob from Georgia

The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by. (Felix Adler)

Julio Franco is an amazing Christian athlete. He is the oldest currently active baseball player and has set records for oldest player to hit a grand slam, second oldest to steel a base, and second oldest to hit a homerun. Along with this, he has 4,200 hits in his career, matched only by the great Ty Cobb and Pete Rose. He has played for United States, Mexican, and Asian teams throughout his career. He has proven to be an outstanding baseball player and a good Christian athlete.

Julio Franco has always been a good baseball player. He began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1982 and was traded to the Cleveland Indians that same year. He hit very well, over .300, for the 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989 seasons. When he switched to second base he won a Silver Slugger Award during the 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 seasons. In 1989 he was traded to the Texas Rangers.

Franco continued to play well with many different teams. He went to the All-Star game during the 1989, 1990, and 1991 seasons and received the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game MVP in 1990. In 1993 he became a free agent and signed with the Chicago White Sox. In 1994, as a result of the strike, he left the MLB and went to play for a team in Japan. He then returned to the MLB and went to the Mexican Baseball League. Next he went to Asia to play and later back to Mexico. In 2001, the 43 year old signed with the Atlanta Braves and at age 47 he signed a two year contract with the New York Mets.

I chose Julio Franco because he is a good Christian role-model. To add to this he plays baseball which is my favorite sport. He also has shown me what you can do with your life if you stick to your dream.

Julio Franco is an outstanding Christian athlete. He has accomplished much with his life. He is currently a free agent and is the oldest active player at age 49. I hope he continues to play baseball and inspire other kids.
