Who: Guion S. Bluford is the first African American astronaut to go to the moon. He has 4 brothers and 2 sisters. His dad is an engineer and his mom is a teacher. His careers were being an engineer, astronaut, pilot in the air force, and president of the aerospace technology center. He was a man with a lot of hard jobs.

What he did: He flew a lot of missions in the Vietnam War. [About 144 to 150 combat missions]. He received many awards for being an astronaut, a secondary leader of the ASTC, and for flying many combat missions around Vietnam. He was also a fight instructor for 5 years at the Sheppard air force base at Texas.

Where he was born, where he graduated, and where he got his careers: He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Penn State as a Air force ROTC graduate. He got his air force career at Williams Air Force Base. He got his NASA career at the Kennedy Space Center at Florida.

When he was born, when he graduated, when he got his careers, and how long did he stay in space: He was born on November 22, 1942. He graduated in 1964. He got his Air Force Career in 1966. He got his NASA career in 1979. He was in space for 28 days plus 16 hours plus 33 minutes.

How he was inspired to do these things: He was inspired to do these things because he did very well in college, he was one of the 35 unique applicants out 8,878 applicants for the astronaut program, and because he never gave up even if other people said he wasn’t college type or good at some things.
