Gillian Caldwell

20.9 million adults and children are sold worldwide into commercial sexual services, and are forced and bonded labor. Gillian Caldwell is one of the many people trying to decrease  that number. Gillian Caldwell, CEO and co-founder of a non-profit organization, has a degree from Harvard University and is currently living in London. A hero posses the need to fix what is wrong, the knowledge of what they're doing, and be able to lead a group of people. Gillian Caldwell has shown throughout her life that she is an activist, intelligent, and natural leader and is therefore an inspiring hero.

Caldwell is proven to be an activist in the articles "Gillian Caldwell" published by Architects of Peace Foundation  and "Witness gives power to people; nonprofit rights group puts media tools to good use.", by Carly Mayberry. Caldwell is so passionate about being an activist and changing the world that she started a nonprofit."In 1992, in the wake of the infamous Rodney King beating, Caldwell teamed up with musician Peter Gabriel to form WITNESS, an independent non-profit that uses the power medium of video to expose human rights around the world." (Architects of Peace Foundation). Caldwell has used Witness to change how people see the world. She exposed the problems that human rights have been taken from people  throughout different countries. Because of her activism and her organization, she has brought attention to many things that need fixing in the world. Caldwell has taken many issues to heart, like sex trafficking, as shown in: "She is particularly proud of Witness' work with the Global Survival Network, a collaboration that she said helped lay the groundwork for U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to address the international trafficking of women with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 1997." (Mayberry).Caldwell and her organization have affected the lives of many, including those who were being trafficked. Because of her work problems, like sex trafficking,get the attention and can be solved. In the process of sex trafficking getting solved, millions of girls will be able to return to their family. Caldwell recognizes this and works hard to reach that resolve. Gillian Caldwell and her organization, Witness, have saved many lives through their work. Caldwell's need to get the truth out, good or bad, is why she's considered a hero.

In two articles both titled "Gillian Caldwell" Architects of Peace Foundation and Good Pitch both show that Caldwell has a high intelligence and because of it is perfect for her job. Caldwell has much more than just an education, she has experience: "Between the fall of 2010 and the summer of 2015 when she joined Global Witness, she served as President of Gillian Caldwell Consulting, which helped progressive non-profits, corporations, and foundations increase their impact." (Good Pitch).Gillian Caldwell has had lots of experience throughout her life. Before she was CEO of Witness, she offered resources and helped start up other non-profits. With all her experience Gillian Caldwell is one of the most qualified in her field.  She also has an education to back up all her experience: "Armed with a BA from Harvard and a juris doctorate from Georgetown, Gillian Caldwell is an attorney and filmmaker who has spent the better part of the last three decades passionately committed to the cause of human rights." (Architects of Peace Foundation). Caldwell was  highly educated before her jobs at countless organizations. She attended Harvard, an ivy league school, and spent her life dedicated making the world a better place. Thanks to all the knowledge she knows she can easily run Witness and help change the world.

On Witness' site it explains their gratitude for their CEO in the article "Welcome to Gillian Caldwell - Our New CEO." and in "Gillian Caldwell" by Good Pitch the idea of her being a natural leader is supported. While leaving Witness for a few years Gillian led another nonprofit called 1Sky."She led 1Sky, a US campaign that grew into 350.org, which helped kick up a huge stink over how the US was dragging its heels on carbon emissions and ultimately became a major voice in global mobilisation efforts to tackle climate change" (Global Witness). Before she returned to her position at Witness, Caldwell led 1Sky. She has made thousands of people realize what's going on about climate change. She is passionate about it and with her seat at the top she's had power to do something . As the director of 1Sky she worked tirelessly to unite more people in her cause: "In 2010, she completed three years as the Director of 1Sky (now merged with www.350.org), which she helped build from inception and which grew to become the largest collaborative climate and energy campaigns in the United States, combining the force of over 600 allied organizations, and a team including organizers in 23 states nationwide."(Good Pitch). Caldwell spend most of her life leading others. Either at 1Sky or Witness, she always takes a leadership position.  Because of her 1Sky grew immensely in her 3 years leading it.  Caldwell provided the leadership that the organization needed and not only helped change 1Sky but also helped unite 23 states over climate change. After leading both organizations Gillian Caldwell proves that being  natural leader is a key point to being a hero.

Gillian Caldwell shows she's an activist, a natural leader and intelligent, throughout her life as a hero. Caldwell spent her life as CEO of Witness and 1Sky. She is an activist for climate change, sex trafficking and many  other issues. With her high education and years of experience, she's more than qualified for her position in Witness. From Witness to 1Sky Caldwell, she has been a natural leader and has made both grow exceptionally. Caldwell was fighting for what she believed was right before Witness. She took on many people to save the lives of countless young women involved in trafficking. She also produced a film, Citizen Koch, that changed outdated and unwanted laws throughout the world. As CEO of Witness, Caldwell has lots of power over what they do and don't investigate. So because of her efforts, many people have been informed of the problems going on around them and are bringing more attention to it so that can be resolved. Gillian Caldwell still works as CEO of Witness in London and continues to change the world for the better every day.
