Gene Cernan

by Bailey from Loveland

Gene Cernan was an Apollo astronaut and a naval aviator. He was the very last man to ever walk on the face of the moon. He also flew on several other spaceflight missions leading up to his colossal space flight to the moon. He went to Purdue University. His dad is Slovak and his mom is Czech. He is a Chicago native.

He first flew on Gemini 9 and conducted a space walk but he began to experience many problems and they had to call it off. Next he flew right over the Apollo 11 landing site, preparing Neil Armstrong for his landing. Later he flew on the very last Apollo mission. It was the first ever night launch and there were over 1 million people watching it at NASA. The mission was a complete success. He now lives near Houston, Texas.

This is one of the many astronauts and naval aviators that inspired me to want to join the navy and later become an astronaut. Gene Cernan demonstrated patience on all three of his space flights. He had to know God would protect him and he could get his job done.

About a year ago I was able to meet him. He had a lot to say about his experience in the Navy and NASA. The biggest thing I remember was when  he said that there is no way there isn't a creator, it's so big and indescribable. If you don't believe you are crazy.

Famous Quotes

"The U.S. should challenge its youth beyond their own expectations by giving them a chance to be on board during our voyage to the stars, not simply as a passenger who has $20 million for a ticket to ride into orbit, but as a crew member selected for a purpose. This can and should be done now, not later."
