Hero is a powerful word, defined in many ways. Generally, a hero can be a person who has dedicated his/her life to improving the lives of others. This can occur in many ways: a soldier who protects his country, a firefighter who saves someone from a burning building, even a doctor, these are all heroes who day by day act to improve our lives. In this case, I looked at the concept a bit differently, I chose a man who is dedicated to improving our future, by his actions in the present.

Gil Shwed was born on January 1st, 1968, in Jerusalem. Gil was a brilliant child - he began programming at the age of 13, and became a computer science student in the Hebrew University only two years afterwards, while he was still in "Leyada" high-school.
When he turned 18, he served in the Intelligence Corps Unit 8200. 8200 is the unit responsible for collecting signal intelligence and code decryption. It also appears in military publications as the Central Collection Unit of the Intelligence Corps and is sometimes referred to as Israeli SIGINT National Unit (ISNU).
Not much information is available about Mr. Shwed's personal life. It is my understanding that he is divorced with 3 children and has a son with his girlfriend. From articles that I read it seems that he is a very devoted dad since he tries to make time in his busy day to take them and pick them up from school. He is extremely passionate about cooking and photography, and he is a philanthropist in the area of youth education.
At the age of 25, in 1993, this determined programmer co-founded a company, Check Point, with Shlomo Kramer to further develop his innovative patented technology: "Stateful Inspection".

Gil Shwed is known to be the inventor of modern firewalls. Without his brilliance, the Internet and technological world would have probably been dominated and nuked by hackers long ago. Check Point is the largest cyber security company globally. Check Point provides industry-leading solutions, and protects customers, from big industries to everyday people, from cyber attacks and identity theft with high success rates. As the company's motto goes - "We Secure the Future", this company focuses its efforts on perfecting their security tools in order to keep their customers safe in the era to come where everything is connected via the internet.The ramifications of cyberattacks in a world where everything is connected virtually would be devastating. From being denied accesses to your car or house, to the extreme case where your car drives you off a bridge, the possibilities would be endless.
Gil Shwed, and the company he founded and runs, lead in technological advancement and security. This act, of leading, advancing, persisting and securing, is, in my eyes, an act of a heroism.

Gil Shwed has been a programmer from an early age, as I am, therefore I have great respect for him and his accomplishments. While it may seem that Mr. Shwed is not very important, or that he hasn't had much effect on the world, it is the determination to keep improving his technology, that I find so inspiring. I dream to be such a brilliant programmer and am as determined to fulfill my goals as Gil Shwed continues to do.
