Gordie Howe was born on March 31, 1928. He was born in Floral, Saskatchewan, but moved to Saskatoon when he was 3 months old. Gordie Howe got his first pair of skates when he was five from a neighbour. They were so big, he had to wear an extra pair of socks! As a child, he played hockey using whatever he could find--a puck, a tennis ball, or even clumps of dirt. He was very clumsy, but eventually he became a great skater.

When Gordie Howe was 15 years old, he tried out for the New York Rangers. He was told he would never make it in the NHL. He kept trying and eventually he became a player for the Detroit Red Wings.

Gordie Howe, also known as "Mr. Hockey," held records for goals, assists, total points, and for most games played. His goal was to play as long as he could and he succeeded at that goal. He played 26 seasons, and he holds the NHL record for most seasons played. Gordie Howe is well known for his skill, strength, and determination.

Gordie Howe has won six Hart Trophies for being the MVP and six Art Ross Trophies for being the top scorer. He also received the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. There is also a statue dedicated to Gordie Howe located in Saskatoon.
