Dan Gable

by Justin from Cordova, Alaska

My hero is Dan Gable. Dan Gable was a very good wrestler and was just as good as a coach. Dan Gable has gone to the Olympics and won the gold medal. Gable became the head wrestling coach for the university of Iowa. He got the Hawkeyes to win the NCAA title every year from 1978 through 1986. Gable retired from wrestling in 1973, he then tried to come back and wrestle again in 1975, but couldn't, due to a pinched nerve. Dan Gable is still alive and has four daughters; his daughters aren't and weren't in wrestling, but they excelled in other sports such as golf, swimming and volleyball.

In Gable's sophomore year, which was 1964, he and his parents were on a trip and his sister was raped and murdered in the Gable's house. Gable and his family took this very hard so Gable turned to wrestling to take his parents thoughts off of his sister's death so much. Dan Gable was born on October 25th, 1948, in Waterloo, Iowa. Dan Gable retired from coaching because he had to get hip surgery to replace his hip. Since he retired, Gable has served as the assistant for Iowa university's athletics director. Gable has also coached the U.S. wrestling Olympic team during 1980, 1984 and 1990. He has written books and directed instructional videos and made wrestling camps.

I chose Dan Gable to be my hero because he was one of the greatest wrestlers ever, had extreme training sessions and made camps for wrestlers to go to get better. I also like that he was one of the best coaches for a wrestling team.
