Wayne Gretzky

by Russell from Romeoville, Illinois

The first connection that I had with Wayne Gretzky was when I first saw him on video. I was amazed at how great he was. I had never seen anyone skate so fast. He was always in the perfect position at the right time. He never gave up, even when he was down. Wayne Gretzky was the all time greatest hockey player. He was the best to ever play the game of hockey. He is my hero because he had integrity. He never talked behind anyone's back. He was always true and honest. Also he had integrity by showing nobody gets left behind or not treated fairly. Another thing is that he never got on any one's back about what they did wrong on the ice. He showed integrity for others by being a leader. He always made his own path for others to follow. Wayne inspires people in lots of ways. He inspires people by giving them a dream, and by giving a good example for the people who are inspired by him. Another way Wayne gretzky inspires people is by how much courage he has. When he got hit, he would get right back up. Once he felt pain, he would work and keep pushing right through it.

Wayne Gretzky is my hero because he always made me feel confident. When I see him skate I start to think maybe I can do that someday. He also makes me feel like I have a passion for what I do and also makes me feel like I could do whatever I want when I grow up. Wayne Gretzky showed me that being a good person can take you far, and so can working as hard as you can in every single practice and every single game. Another reason why Wayne Getzky is my hero is because he overcomes. He has overcome both injuries and tough losses. I mean, imagine getting hit by a 200 lb. hockey player. That probably would not feel too good. Also, a couple of times he went to the Stanley cup and lost. That would be the toughest loss ever. Wayne Gretzky has confidence, because if he didn’t have confidence then how would he be where he is at right now. You really have to believe you have enough talent to go to the NHL. Confidence gets you to work, practice, and dedicate. Once you start to get confident you start to get a big head. This never happened to him.

Wayne is my hero because he has honor. He has honor because he stays out of trouble, stays to his word about what he says, and is never disrespectful to his players and coach’s. Another way Wayne Gretzky is honorable is because he stuck with his code (stay out of trouble etc…) throughout his whole career. Wayne Gretzky is my hero, because he gives back. He teaches kids to play to their best ability. He also gives back by giving someone a goal when before someone gave him a goal. Wayne Gretzky is my hero, because he is a leader, not a follower. He leads people by helping them, giving them confidence, and not following other people's tracks. Another way Wayne Gretzky leads people is by giving up things so they can become better. Another character trait that I admire about Wayne Gretzky is that he has a great deal of self discipline. He always followed a strict diet and exercise regimen. As an athlete myself I appreciate how difficult it could be to keep your body system in its very best condition. Wayne also shows self discipline by staying calm and staying out of the penalty box. Wayne Gretzky is my hero because he has a passion for what he does. Not only has Wayne Gretzky spent more than a decade as a pro hockey player, he is now a coach for the Phoenix Coyotes. Gretzky has also worked as a commentator on both U.S and Canadian television. Gretzky is considered the best player to ever play the game of hockey. Playing hockey on a competitive level requires mental, physical and emotional strength. It is easier to lose your self confidence when you or your teammates are not playing at your best. Gretzky is an example of a world class athlete who endured no matter what challenges he had to face. It is easier for me to find the strength and confidence to become a pro hockey player.

Extra Info

Wayne Gretzkey They call him the great one. Who never gave up. Who always was honest and truthful. And who had a hockey stick in his hand his whole life. Who felt the cold ice after falling over and over again. Who also loved the sound of the crowd roar from the stands. Who had a passion for what he does. Who feels the intensity from the game. And who hears the sound of the skates hitting the ice. When I see him on television I think wow that’s the great one.
