A hero is someone you idealize, someone caring, dedicated and strong. My grandfather is my hero. He is a doctor and spent years in college when a semester was only $400 a month. Not only is he committed to his career in medicine, he is also a devoted father of five and grandfather of seven. I admire his dedication, determination, love for his chosen career and overall compassion. He applied himself and became an accomplished physician.
My grandfather was born in a small town in Western Pennsylvania. Shortly after my grandfather finished high school, my great grandfather died. My grandfather had big plans of going to college and medical school after high school, but now things had changed. After the death of his father, doubts were plaguing his mind. Was he was doing the right thing, leaving his now widowed mother and his younger siblings? Like many small towns, opinions were vocalized. Was he abandoning his family or trying to take care of them in the large scheme of things? Now he had inherited the position as the new man of the house. Thanks to his aunt he overcame the fear of gossip and self-recriminations. Aunt Mary insisted he go to college and then other family members followed in suit.
My grandfather, also known as Dr. Carnes to his patients, has many accomplishments. He has been in practice since 1959. He earned his bachelor’s degree of Science at Franklin and Marshall and graduated from Hahnemann medical school. Dr. Carnes was the president of the New Jersey Medical Society in the 1990’s. Dr. Carnes continues to have his own private practice and also treats patients at the Collingswood Manor. He works with a lot of elderly patients that need someone to listen and talk to them. He does a great job doing this since he is such a people person. Any patient he loses he stays after work to call the grieving families to give his condolences.
Not only is he an excellent doctor but also an exceptional father. My grandfather lives in a large house in West Collingswood that is always welcoming to family and friends. He is the type of person you can go to when you are in need and he is always willing to share his wisdom and support. My grandfather encourages sports and would even come to watch your games. He made sure his children received the best education by sending several of them to boarding schools. As a man of strong values he tried to implant those same important values in his children.
My grandfather is an amazing man with many accomplishments and will always be my hero because of his hard work and perseverance. I admire his patience, when he has to deal with people complaining about their illnesses all day long. I love that he is so passionate about his career and I can only hope I am as lucky as him to find a career I am passionate about. I can only dream I can care for my family and nurture them with essential morals like he did. No wonder my grandfather is my hero.
