My personal hero could walk, talk, and see like any other toddler. Characteristics I look for in a hero are determination, positive, attitude, and mental toughness. Helen Keller possessed all of these traits. Helen Keller is all of the things that I look for in a hero because she was always positive, determined, and strong throughout all of the challenges she faced during her life.
Helen Keller never gave up no matter how difficult things got. Before the age of two, she knew how to walk, talk, and communicate with others just like any other toddler. One day Helen's mother went up to see her baby but when her mother, Kate, tried to get Helen's attention, Helen didn't flinch or make a peep. That was the day Helen's mother found out Helen had become deaf and blind. Helen then immediately decided to fight back and she tried her hardest to learn sign language from her teachers. Later in life, she wrote a book about her life and her struggles in an effort to educate people about the deaf and blind. This book was called, Story of My Life. All her determination led to getting an award as one of the twentieth century's leading humanists.
Helen Keller was also a very positive person. She achieved many of her goals and made many lifelong friendships while attending college. Helen’s positive nature allowed her to attend college at Radcliff College. There she faced many challenges from teachers but she stayed positive and graduated. During college she met Anne Sullivan. Anne Sullivan taught sign language and in time they became great friends. When Anne left college to get married, Helen was sad but stayed positive. Helen was very happy for Anne and her husband and they remained friends for life.
Helen showed her strength when Anne left school because, when Anne left school, Helen graduated in 1904. Helen showed her strengths when she wrote her book, went to homes and schools, and communicated with others with her disabilities. In Helen's book, Story of My Life, she felt that she needed to do more to change the world. So Helen started going to homes and schools herself to change other people's lives, just like Anne did for her. Helen communicated to help people with her disabilities.
Helen Keller's disabilities didn't get to her life. Today, I can say that Helen Keller has affected my life. She reminds me that life is too short to judge people by the way they look. What really matters is the way people treat each other and what is inside of a person. Helen Keller died on June 1, 1968. These are the reasons why Helen Keller is my personal hero.
