Dr. Henry Chang-Yu Lee

by Lu from Taipei

Dr. Henry Chang-Yu Lee, who is called "King of the Crime Scene" by the U.S. media, is a Chinese-born America forensic scientist. He is one of the world' s foremost forensic scientists and founder of the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. Born on November, 22, 1938 in Rugao, China, and fled to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese Civil War in the late 1940s. Lee was the eleventh of thirteen children. Though growing up in bad situation, Lee never gave up to attend in university. Instead, he went on to graduate in 1960 from the Central Police College with a degree in Police Science. Henry then began his work with the Taipei Police Department, where he rose to the rank of captain at only 25 years old. He later immigrated to the U.S. with his wife in 1965

How many scientists can be called the simultaneous titles of state police commissioner, chief state fire marshal, chief building inspector, director of the state forensic laboratory and university professor? Probably there is only an answer, Connecticut' s Henry Lee. When Lee came to the U.S., he had only 50 in his pocket. He worked full time at New York University Medical Center, teaching Kung-Fu and working as a waiter in his part time. 20-hour workdays are considered normal for him. Lee enrolled at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York and completed his Ph. D in human genetics and molecular biology in 1975. When he became a scientist, he said, " I was told I was a good scientist and would never become a professor because I speak with a foreign accent." But he became a full professor and his accent had not put a crimp in his teaching. On 1998, he became the commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Safety. No matter what difficulties he had faced, he just worked harder than everyone and maintained high ethical standards. Henry brake the glass ceiling successfully! Lee said, "Which start-line you stand on doesn't matter, which point of your life selection is important.) This sentence has already become one of my mottoes.
