"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength the patience the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."- Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was born into slavery some time around 1820. No one really knows when she was born, because no kept track of when slaves were born. At that time her name was Harriet Ross. When Harriet was only 5 years old she was rented to a local couple with the name of Cook. The woman's name was Susan Cook, or as Harriet would call her, Ms. Susan. One time Ms. Susan caught Harriet taking a sugar cube. Before Ms. Susan could grab her Harriet ran. She came back later that day, and got whipped horribly. The cook family thought she was stupid and slow. Later, when Harriet was 15 she saw a black man running away. The overseer followed with a whip, so did Harriet. The overseer grabbed a weight and tried to hit the man, but missed and hit Harriet. From this you can see Harriet Tubman "fought", and knew slavery was wrong even though she was younger. Harriet Tubman is a hero, and I think she would be in the freedom category because she helped slaves reach freedom.
Harriet Tubman is a hero because she fought for her family, community, and herself. She freed about 300 slaves including her parents. Because of her influence on slaves and freeing so many people, slave owners wanted her capture desperately. Harriet Tubman is also a hero because she refused to quit when times were tough and no one agreed with her. She worked in the Underground Railroad, even though she knew that if she was found working there she would get caught. If Harriet was ever caught she would be in big trouble. Harriet Tubman had a dedication to serving other people, and she will always be remembered for that. She is a big role model and people look up to her, that's why more people escaped and some slaves even helped others escape to freedom.
Harriet did a lot of things to help slavery. She was even in the civil war, and the Union Army. Harriet Tubman worked in the Underground Railroad to help slaves escape without being caught. On Harriet's first trip to the Underground Railroad a women who was a "conductor" there gave her a broom and had her go outside and work. This was so Harriet would look like a slave and not get caught. She saved about three hundred slaves altogether and most of them were from the Underground Railroad. She also worked in the fields and took care of children. Working in the fields was hard work. Since slavery was only allowed in the South that was where Harriet worked. The South is closer to the equator. That's why working in the fields was such a pain. She took care of kids when she was in the Underground Railroad and when she was a slave. One famous quote that Harriet Tubman used to say was "I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger."Harriet Tubman also worked for the, Union Army, as a nurse cook and spy. She helped allying during the Civil War too. As you can see Harriet did a lot in her life to help people, not just herself.
Harriet Tubman is a person who deserves many awards, for not just helping people people, but for putting others before herself. She was honored more than once by the Union Army. Also Queen Victoria gave her a silver medal. This isn't really an award but Susan B. Anthony long admired her, that's an award itself. Also in the book it says , "She brought the two races together, made it possible for the white race to place a higher estimate on upon the black race." I think Harriet Tubman should get an award just for being herself and doing what's right.
Harriet Tubman has a lot of character traits, most of them have helped her reach where she is now. The first one is determination. Harriet Tubman is full of determination because she never gave up. Even when her brothers and husband didn't want to come with her to freedom. Another character trait that Harriet Tubman has is being brave. Harriet is brave because, even when there were wanted signs for 40,000 dollars in award worth of her capture, she kept going and ignored it. She was brave. Lastly Harriet Tubman is caring. She is caring because she helped in the Union Army, and saved lots of people from death. She never gave up because of these traits, and they helped her a lot.
Harriet Tubman is a person that many people look up to because her bravery, determination and kindness. I think it was very fun to learn and research about her. She is known for helping others, and putting people before herself.
