Freedom

Harriet Tubman

by Kristen from San Francisco

I grew up like a neglected weed - ignorant of liberty, having no experience of it.
Harriet Tubman (I drew it!)
Harriet Tubman (I drew it!)

Harriet Tubman was a very brave person. She is my hero because she stood up for what she believed in and was a very smart person. Her life has inspired me to stand up for what I believe in and to stand up for others. Harriet Tubman was born as a slave on a Maryland plantation in 1821. She wanted to go to the north where there was no slavery.

Harriet and two of her brothers tried to go to freedom and headed north. Her brothers got scared and headed back home. Even though her brothers left her she kept going. Luckily, there was an underground railroad that helped slaves go to freedom. This route stretched from the South to the North and to Canada. Thanks to he underground railroad, Harriet made it to Philadelphia.

Even though Harriet made it to freedom she still wanted to help her family and other slaves. She was known as the “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. She would take groups of slaves and lead them to freedom. She led over 300 slaves to freedom including her family. The southern slave owners tried very hard to capture her, even offered awards for anyone who found her.

One of Harriet adventures was when she was leading a group of slaves into freedom in a dark time. She was keeping her head up high and acting if it wasn’t bad. The slaves only talked in whispers because of the slave- catching dogs. Quickly, Harriet told the slaves to go in the icy cold water so that the dogs couldn’t smell their scent. The slaves and Harriet waited until the barking stopped and waited for the contact person from the next station. He had told her there was a barn with food and so she led the slaves there where the food had been as promised. Another great thing Harriet Tubman did was when she was only a teenage girl she stood up for a slave boy who was getting whipped. She stood in front of the boy and got whipped. As the slave boy started to run away they threw a heavy iron weight at the slave, but instead hit Harriet in the head and she fell to the ground. She got a huge scar from it.

Harriet Tubman is a strong and independent person who I believe is a fantastic leader. She had many achievements in her life such as setting slaves free and she reached those achievements. Harriet Tubman is a great person to look up to and is an amazing role model for others. She is someone I can look up to. That is why she is my hero. Harriet Tubman is my hero!
