Harry Kewell

by Brendan from Forster, Australia

My hero is Harry Kewell because in my mind he is a great soccer player and I look up to him as a role model. He was born on the 22nd of September in the year 1978 in a suburb called Smithfield in Sydney Australia. He is one of the wealthiest Australian sports players. Currently, he plays soccer for Liverpool F.C and the Australian soccer team the Socceroos.

Harry Kewell started playing soccer for Liverpool in 2003 but before that he played for Leeds United. He was offered more money at other clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona. But eventually he chose to play for Liverpool and gets paid between 7 and 9 million dollars a year.

Harry Kewell was rasied in the suburb Smithsfield by his two parents. His dad was an english man called Rod and his mother Helen. Harry started his early school life at a school called Smithfield public. After he finished primary school he went to St Johns Park High School, before getting transferred to Westfield Sports High School. During his time at Westfield High School, he played soccer for the representative team for school and for a club outside of school. He played for the New South Whales team.

At the age of 15 he was allowed the opportunity to travel to England to trial for the English premier league Leeds United for four weeks. He traveled to England with his friend Bret Emerton, not knowing that in many years the two would be playing together for the Socceroos. Both were successful, but only Kewell was able to take up the club's offer due to his father's English heritage, which overcame strict visa requirements.

Harry Kewell made his debut at the age of 17 on the 30th of March 1996 at a 1-0 defeat. He scored his first goal in Leeds United in a 3-1 win against Stoke City. He was one of Leeds United's best midfielders, helping them to the semi-finals, however in the later years the team had financial problems and had to let him go as well as Mark Viduka.

Harry Kewell is married to Sheere Murphy and they have three children called Taylor, Ruby and Matilda.
