Dorothy Hamill

by Shannon from USA

Who is a hero to you? Your hero can be a famous person or even a person who helps out in your community. My hero is Dorothy Hamill, who was born on July 26, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. She then moved to Riverside, Connecticut. She won the Olympic Gold Medal for ice skating in 1976. In her career, she was known as the "Hamill Camel" because she created her own spin! She even had people copy her "wedge" hair style.

When Dorothy was eight years old, she started to ice skate. She started skating in her grandparents’ backyard. She then started taking skating lessons with Gus Lussi, her coach in Lake Placid, New York.

Dorothy Hamill, trained hard for the 1976 Olympic Games. Dorothy had to wake up at 5:30 A.M to drive to the rink. She would practice endless hours to perfect her skating.

Dorothy’s dreams came true when she won the Gold Medal in Women's Figure Skating in 1976 at Innsbruck, Austria. Later on she then bought the Ice Capade' Show. All of that hard work paid off.

Finally, Dorothy has done many things for the U .S. Dorothy is always determined to try new things. For instance, when she missed a jump she would try over and over again until she got it. I’m determined, like her, because in basketball when I try to make a lay-up if I miss it I practice this lay-up for a long time. I eventually will make it. She is a hero to me.
