Mark Lavon Helm

My hero is Mark Lavon Helm, known as Levon Helm. He was the singer/drummer for the Canadian-American band, The Band. He contracted throat cancer in the 90’s and although he lost his old singing voice, it has improved in the past years and he is singing again. The Band played with many famous musicians during the mid-60’s and early seventies, including Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins and Muddy Waters.

Levon Helm lives atop Overlook Mountain. The Last Waltz was the last time The Band ever played as a group. Levon Helm is my hero because he was an inspiring musician and he fought through the devastating effects of throat cancer and is singing once again.
