Rufus, Target, and Sasha

by Austin from Barrie

The hero dogs, Rufus, Target, and Sasha. They are any normal dogs to anyone else but, but they are heroes to the soldiers.

They were all born around 2005-2006 somewhere in Afghanistan. They are all family, even with the soldiers. Their lives as youths were not the best. They were homeless for most of their lives which was horrible in their town because of all the fighting around them. Then one day they walked into an army barrack. The soldiers treated them like family, they were given an education of attacking and protecting, and were given a home much better than on the streets.

The dogs were influenced by the soldiers and each other to do better in their job of protecting. One day there was an event that would change the dogs and the soldiers' lives forever. One day the dogs and the army men were sitting at the barracks when an unknown person came, but the dogs knew what it was. It was a suicide bomber trying to blow up the barracks. The dogs moved fast and attacked the bomber; the bomber just got out of the car and knew if he didn’t detonate now he would be killed by the dogs. The bomber detonated and made a big ball of smoke, once the smoke cleared Sgt. Young and the army men rushed to the scene. The dogs were in bad shape but they knew the dogs saved them so the soldiers treated them like soldiers. Sasha’s wounds were so bad she was put down. Rufus and Target were sent to a military hospital and were healed of their wounds.

Sgt. Young knew he would never see the dogs again once he left Afghanistan. He was in the United States for a while and he worked with the military to find and bring back the hero dogs to the United States. Sgt. Young was given Target and another Sergeant was given Rufus.

The dogs are truly heroes, they show courage and bravery for attacking the suicide bomber without thinking of the consequences of being killed or badly injured. The dogs show optimism for being homeless and always being happy and cheerful before and after they found the barracks. They also make the soldiers feel happy and less homesick in a place where it is hard to.

The hero dogs Rufus, Target and Sasha have influenced many people around the world. They have shown me that you don’t have to be human to be a hero and even though the dogs did something big, you can do something small to be a hero. The dogs might have even influenced other dogs to do something that would consider them a hero if they could understand. The most influenced people were the soldiers because the dogs kept them company, happy, and always kept them going in place full of hate.
