Do you think you could save more then 2500 children from tightly guarded camp? If you are caught then you are sentenced to death. Irena Sendler did just that. She rescued children from camps. Irena Sendler is amazing because she treated Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, rescued children from the camp, and escaped execution.
Irena Sendler's father was a doctor and her mother was a social worker. Her dad died of Typhus, which he got while treating for the Jewish patients that his fellow doctors refused to treat. When the Nazis came to Poland the Jews were confined to a Ghetto. With so many people in such a small space diseases began to spread. Germans were scared that they would be killed from the diseases. They let Irena in and out of the camp to give vaccinations and medicines.
When Irena went into the camp she would take a child out with her. She would smuggle children out in boxes, bags, the back of trucks and ambulances. She hoped that one day they would reunite with their families. She kept the children's names, and their new identities on tissue paper that she put in glass jars and buried in the yard. Unfortunately many of the families were killed.
The Nazis caught Irena. They never found the records. They also thought she was working alone when she was in fact the leader of a well-organized group. She was sentenced to death but escaped execution. She was beaten and, with her arms and legs broken, she was left in a field to die, where her team rescued her. She spent the rest of the war working to save children under an assumed name.
Being the amazing women Irena was she treated Jews in highly guarded camps, saved over 2500 children, and escaped execution. Irena Sendler in a true hero to many people. She is brave. She is caring. She is a HERO.
