Ian Thorpe was born on the 13th of October, 1982. Ian was the second child of Ken and Margaret Thorpe already having a girl, Christina. Ian attended Milperra Public and graduated from East Hills Boy Technology High in year 10. Really becoming a swimmer by chance, he followed in the foot steps of his older sister, having become bored of watching her at carnivals. Ian's large build of 1.95cm tall and 105kg with a size 17 foot has made him one of the greatest swimmers the world has ever seen. He announced his retirement on the 21st of November, 2006 after a 10 year career on the Australian Swim Team. Ian stated that he lost the desire and there are a few more important things in his life at present that he wishes to pursue.

Ian Thorpe is classified as a hero because of all his outstanding achievements in swimming and throughout life. Some of his awards are:

Young Australian Of The Year

Australian and World Swimmer Of the Year

Male Athlete of the Year

He also set world records for the 400m and 200m free and was a member of the 200m and 100m freestyle record-breaking teams.

Ian Thorpe is My Hero. He has influenced my life and probably many more by his modest ways and incredible achievements. He also demonstrated that by enjoying and giving 100%, you will be amazed at what you can achieve.

The picture to the left is Ian Thorpe winning the 400m at the Sydney Olympics. I feel it expresses Ian's relief from the pressure of the media, self achievement for all those hours spent training and humbled excitement on winning a gold medal.
