James Pierson Beckwourth

by Jake from Connecticut

Intro to my 19th century hero-
There has been many heroes in history but no one more important to me than James Beckwourth. Throughout his life he tried to do everything and he could only do so much. But overall he accomplished a lot in life. But to me a hero is somebody that someone admires and looks up to, which is why James Beckwourth can be a hero. Everyone in life wants to do everything but then again you can't. This is what happened to James Beckwourth and why I classify him as a hero.

When did they live/who where they trying to help-
James Pierson Beckwourth was born on April 6th 1798 in Fredrick County, Virginia. At a young age he spent his life in fur trapping and Western Exploration. After that in 1809 he moved with his family to St. Louis, Missouri, and became a blacksmith until age 19. His fur trapping experience led him into his own business and to explore the Rocky Mountains. There he started to fight Indians and became a great hunter. As he explored more the Crow Indians captured him and classified him to be native.

What makes your person a hero-
What makes my person a hero is that he explored the Rocky Mountains which is heroic to me and maybe not to others. Not only that, he also fur trapped and fought Indians. He also became a great hunter. I love the outdoors so this is a person just like me. Another big thing is that he always tried new things. Nothing more can make him else a hero because the only way you can become a hero is to try things, and when you try things you find something you like which can make you a hero.

What is your person's legacy-
James Beckwourth's legacy was different than others at the time because he was always trying something new. But the majority of the time people sometimes called him a native because he was always exploring the Rocky Mountains. But overall his legacy was some things he did and left behind. He became a professional card player and also helped miners a lot during the gold rush by opening up stores around the Gold Rush. He also established the Beckwourth trail which led up into the Rockies and where he met lots of Indians. They also honored his grave on the trail where he died, since he died in the Rockies.

What advice would they have for today's youth-
He would probably have great advice for today's youth. The first thing he would say would be always try new things because he was always doing or trying new things. Another thing he would probably say would be to always try your hardest because at a young age he was nowhere near a blacksmith but then he became a blacksmith and a pro card player. He worked hard at those both for a long time.
