My Hero John Britten

By Keita Te-rangi Brightwell

John Britten was born on August 1st 1950 at 11:50pm by Bruce and Ruvae Britten in Christchurch. John was born a twin but is the oldest child. John's only sibling is his twin sister Marguerite. His childhood at school was not easy as he was a dyslexic person. When he had an exam he would have to get someone to read him the questions. As a child you would have a hero and, well, John's heroes were New Zealanders. They were Richard Pearse (Pioneer aviator), Bill Hamilton (Father of the Jet Boat), Bruce Mclaren (Champion Driver and founder of the Mclaren Formula One Team), and Burt Munro (World record motorcycle speedster and subject film The world's fastest Indian). As he has loads of heroes in his short lifetime, Britten was regularly and favorably compared with all the heroes in his own way. At the age of twelve, John had just saved enough to buy a gas engine for his motor bike. For four years of his life John was completing a mechanical engineering course - at night, that is. In 1982 John Britten married Kirsteen Price and had three kids named Sam, Isabelle and Jessica. John was a really happy man. 1995 was a really sad year as John had been diagnosed with inoperable cancer which was really sad. When it came to September 5, 1995 he had sadly passed away. Thousands of people from all over New Zealand came to support John's family and could see how sad they were. The Funeral was at Christchurch Cathedral.
