Jesus Christ

by Jack Lugo from Roseville

What is a hero? In basic terms, a hero is a big, muscular, handsome man who saves lives. More than half of that is not necessary to being a hero. On the other hand, saving lives or just saving something in general, is usually a common factor in being a hero. My hero, I mean, OUR hero, completed that task around 2000 years ago.

Has anyone ever made a compromise for you? Did they give up something they wanted for you? Whether you know it or not, the answer is yes. That person is Jesus Christ. He gave up something He loved very much; His life. He died for you, yes you, and your sins, so that one day, we could live an eternal life with him in heaven. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16 NIV.

Jesus Christ was born in 4 B.C. in Bethlehem of Judea, present-time Israel. He was raised in the town of Nazareth of Judea, also present-time Israel. Early in His life, He began performing miracles, some of them are pretty well known throughout the planet, even to those who do not believe in Him. A familiar miracle of His is the healing of the blind by, believe it or not, rubbing a spit and dirt concoction into a blind man's eyes and having him wash it off in a nearby water source; restoring the man's vision. Another very familiar miracle is the turning of water to wine in the blink of an eye, "Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water;" so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him." - John 2:6-11 NIV.

He died in 30 A.D. near, yet not in, the town of Jerusalem, Judea, present-time Israel. "Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek." - John 19:20 NIV. Jesus died by crucifixion. It started with Jesus being flogged, the process in which He was whipped with a leather whip with iron balls tied a few inches from the top and a few sharp sheep bones. The leather whip would cut into the skin while the iron balls would cause deep bruising. The sharp sheep bones would help speed up the process of cutting into the skin. After repeated whips, His skin was thoroughly shredded, muscles would begin to cut, and the blood loss was extreme, putting Him into a state of shock. Then He had to carry the cross bar to outside the city walls, weighing 75 to 125 pounds, with His arms strapped to the heavy piece of torture where if He fell, He would have nothing to cushion His fall, sending His face straight to the ground (this happened to other victims). After reaching the site, He was offered wine with mild pain killers, as small gift from the women of Jerusalem. Then he would literally be nailed to the cross, His feet off of the ground, leaving Him on the cross for a small amount of time before He eventually died of blood loss and other things. Now, you are probably thinking, with all of His ability to perform miracles and all, why did He not just get Himself out of there unharmed and put the executioner into critical condition putting them to their death? Well, as sin is not allowed in heaven, it is all over Earth, and Jesus so badly wanted to have a relationship with us, a way had to be made. He died to pay for our sin so that, as it says in John 3:16, whoever believes in Him shall not perish but live an eternal life in heaven, and He was actually joyous that a way was being made through Him! Unbelievable! He loves us more than you can imagine and He paid a very cruel death for us that we deserved. He must really love us.

Jesus Christ indeed passes as a hero. In fact, He is the biggest hero of all times because He saved every soul on the Earth, including yours! If it were not for Him, this world would be filled with unforgivable sin and no one would be able to live with Him in Heaven for eternity, for every soul would be sent to Hell, to the Devil's kingdom of sin and fire. Jesus said, "They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." - Matthew 13:42 NIV. Now, we shall be sent to heaven - to paradise - for all of eternity. It just does not get any better than that.
