John Glenn was an American hero who inspired many people. He orbited the Earth 3 times while risking his life in the process. Later in his life he became the oldest man in space. He also served in the Navy during WWII and The Korean War and went on to become a senator for Ohio.
One reason that John Glenn is a hero is because he served his country in the Navy and in the Senate. He sacrificed his comfort of home and his safety during WWII and the Korean War.He did this to help keep our country safe. He went on over 149 missions in WWII and the Korean War. Later in his life he pursued his interest in politics and ran for Senate. In 1964 he failed so he ran again in 1970. Once again he failed. In 1974 he ran for the last time and won the race to become an Ohio U.S. Senator.

On his first trip to space, he orbited the Earth 3 times in a spacecraft called the Friendship 7. "Glenn becomes the first American to orbit Earth, circling the globe three times in four hours and 56 minutes" (CNN news). John Glenn risked his life to be the first American to orbit Earth. On The next trip he became the oldest man in space. He did it because he wanted to help NASA see how space affects the elderly. He risked his life in space once again for the future of space on October 29, 1998.
A hero is someone who sacrifices themselves for the greater good and inspires others. Many people think that "Glenn became an American hero" (John Glenn Biography). John Glenn sacrificed his comfort for our freedom and future knowledge on space. He Inspired many and won many awards when he orbited Earth 3 times.
