Jane Goodall

by Kayleigh from North Platte

Jane Goodall is a very important person and role model for her research on animals, but mostly her research on chimpanzees. Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934 in London, England. Her parents were Vanna Morris-Goodall and Mortimer Herbert Morris-Goodall.

Jane went to school at the University of Cambridge. She grew up in London, England. Jane’s hobbies were holding the alligator club at her house with her close friends and her cousins. Three other facts about Jane are: her first study of animals was on worms, she also trained a dog named Rusty, and last but not least, Jane and her cousins made a worm museum.

Jane is famous for her study of chimpanzees. A degree helped Jane become successful. Jane married twice. First she married, Hugo Van Lawick. Second, she married Derek Bryceson and they had one child, his name was Hugo, but to his family he was “Grub” and he was born in 1967.

Jane’s work is running a research center in Gombe and studying chimpanzees. Her contribution to society is helping people (like you and me) learn more about chimpanzee behavior. The lasting effects Jane had on people is teaching them a lot of stuff about chimpanzees, like how chimpanzees also use tools and that females are not the dominate gender, only males are. College students who want to follow in Jane’s footsteps can go to the research center and learn how much patience and time it takes to study animals.

I choose to write about Jane because she studied animals. The most impressive thing about Jane is she sort of got to be in the same family as Flo and her children (Faban, Fibin, Fifi, Flint, and Flame.) This is the story of Flo, the chimp, and Jane. When Jane had a good friendship with Flo, Flo came to camp and ate bananas from Jane and the others. Later Jane had a good strong friendship with Flo, so Jane went to Flo’s home. At that time Fifi was a little toddler. Fifi was the only girl that lived to have a family of her own. After Fifi grew up, Flo gave birth to a frisky little boy named Flint. Flint was very dependent on mommy Flo. Like for an example one time Flint threatened an older chimp. If the older threatens him back it’s family to the rescue. It was about three months before old Flo was going to give birth to baby Flame, the last child of Flo. So Flo had to start weaning Flint. When he wanted to nurse Flo would push him away, but he would have terrible tantrums. Because Flo was so old she could not wean Flint in time for the new baby so she had to provide milk for the both of them and she had to carry both of them. Sadly baby Flame was lost or she just died. Flo was so weak that when Flo tried to cross a river she died because the river was too strong for Flo to handle. When Flint found out that his mommy had died he just sat by Flo. Flint was so depressed and so dependent on Flo that soon after Flo died so did Flint. Jane inspired me to study wild animals, when I get older. How I would like to be like Jane is I want to study an animal that people don’t know very much about.
