John Hancock

My Revolutionary War hero is John Hancock. He is a hero because he helped the colonists win freedom from the British. A person can become a hero by speaking out for something that is right or helping someone to have freedom, which is what my hero John Hancock did.

John Hancock was born on January 12th, 1737 in Braintree, Massachusetts. His father's name was John Hancock like his son's and his mother's name was Mary Hawke. But his parent's died when he was young and he was adopted by his uncle. John had two sibling's named Mary and Ebenzer. John was married to a girl named Dorothy Quincy Hancock. They had two children named Lydia Henchman Hancock and John George Washington Hancock. He started fighting for the colonists and speaking out for there cause. John also became involved in politics and was elected to the Boston Assembly in 1776. In 1774 he was Delegate to and President of the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts. Later, John was elected to Continental Congress, and was elected as President of the Continental Congress in 1775. One major accomplishment he had during the war was becoming governor of Massachusetts in 1780. He became governor of Massachusetts because of his popularity, being a generous benefactor, and kind creditor but resigned in 1785. One major event John Hancock had was signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. He wrote his name so big it actually read, "The British Ministry can read that without spectacles; let them double their rewards."

John Hancock had many characteristics that made him a hero. He was brave, had self determination, integrity, strong values, consistency, and enduring support. He was brave because he fought for democracy and the values he saw for the country. He had self determination because he played a pivotal role in founding our nation and in 1776 he was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. He had strong values and integrity because when he signed his name it meant he would follow through with his promise. John had consistency because he never wavered from his beliefs. Finally, John had enduring values because of his relentless pursuit of freedom, having fought against the British for independence.

As you can see John Hancock is an amazing hero because of what he did to help free the colonists from the British and build our nation. John is an important part of American history. His signing of the Declaration of Independence has great significance. Our nation today can look up to him as a hero for all he did to help us have freedom and independence.
