Julia Hill

by Aracely from California

Do people have heroes now in days? I know I do, her name is Julia Hill. She is an inspiration to me because of her commitment and she stuck to her belief and took a stand in what she believed. The best thing of all is she was helping her community by saving trees and helping the other plants around the neighborhood. She loves trees as I like trees as well, that is another reason why she inspires me as my hero. Julia Hill is a great woman because there are a lot of stereotypes about women, and she contributes to help the environment. I as well want to make a difference in my community.

Julia Hill was born on February eighteenth, 1974. In August 1996 She got in near death car accident, a steering wheel was stuck in her head and caused a mild head injury. It took her a year to recover before she was able to talk and walk normally. She then felt like she took everything for granted in her life. She felt like she needed to focus on important things. The reason she became a hero is because she wanted to do things she felt were important and help something that will make a difference. She is a naturalist which is basically a person who studies natural history. This hero made a difference because she lived in a tree that was 180 feet tall and 600 year old tree named Luna. Julia lived barefooted for about two years. She did this because the Pacific Lumber Company wanted to cut down this tree and Julia didn’t want them to do that so she decided that she was going to sit in the tree. Julia had to live in a six by eight foot small tree house. While she was living there she wrote poetry and communicated by cell phone where she also gave interviews.

Julia started living on the tree on December tenth, 1997 until December eighteenth, 1999 and she never gave up and she stayed committed. Well in the year 1999 Pacific Lumber Company and Julia made a deal on what they should do. The company agreed to leave the tree alone and other than that a lot of activist raised $50,000. What they did with that money was they gave it to Pacific Lumber Company. They donated the money to a local university so that they can do research on the forest. Later in that year they went to visit Luna the tree and she was now 200 feet, but a person noticed that they tried to cut down Luna. The tree had a cut that was 32 inches deep so they had to treat Luna. Last year in the spring they saw the tree was doing well and is still growing.

The reason I chose my hero Julia Hill is because she took a stand in what she believed and she never gave up. I also chose her because she was into saving the tree and I hate how they waste trees on non important things. She caught my attention because I read how she saved the tree so I decided to choose her. Even though she had to make a sacrifice and stay in a tree for two years she stayed committed. Julia’s accomplishments inspires me because I want to be committed the way she was and that if I want to stand up in something I truly believe I won’t give up and stand in what I believe. I am driven to change because I agree that we shouldn’t cut down trees especially the oldest ones. I mean we shouldn’t waste so many trees, what’s wrong with recycled paper? So I want to be more involved with society and recycle.

In conclusion, to my inspiration towards Julia Hill, she is a wonderful woman to meet. If I ever had the chance to meet a person that changed their community, it would be Julia Hill. As I said before she loves trees, she cares about them just like I do. She is a unique woman as you can see in my essay; she does not follow other women. She follows her heart and does what’s right. As my readers can see Julia Hill could do anything when it comes to trees and helping their community. Once again Julia Hill is my inspiration and my hero.
