Colonel Jack H. Jacobs

by Frank from Hyderabad, India

Jack H. Jacobs is my hero because he is brave and put his own life at risk to save others. Jacobs had a family but no money. For his family, he went into the military risking his life. That is why he is my hero.

Jack H. Jacobs had a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University but had no money. He had been through ROTC and planned to go back into active duty to get an annual paycheck. But what was coming up was nothing like he expected. On March 9, 1968, Jacobs was with the lead companies of his South Vietnamese battalion during the Vietnam War. They were ambushed and many South Vietnamese were killed. But Jacobs took control and helped the wounded while they were under fire. His bravery saved a lot of his battalion. But, he had broken all of the bones in his face. It took many operations to finally repair it.

I have always wanted to be in the military, just like Jack H. Jacobs. And just like him, I am willing to make sacrifices for my country. The one obstacle that my hero had to overcome was fear: fear of losing his life, fear of never seeing his family again, and fear for his comrades’ safety. But fear did not stop him. He got over them and is still alive to this day.

Jack H Jacobs did not really impact the world. He impacted the way people thought of him and the way I thought of him. He is historical because he won the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is awarded to those men who jeopardized their lives to save other people’s lives in the line of duty. I think everyone should look up to what he does. He sacrificed his life to help his family and the people he cares about.

Vietcong ambushed Jack Jacobs on March 9, 1968. He risked his life and saved most of his battalion. I learned that when life throws challenges at us we have the responsibility to stand up and take care of the problem. I wish that everybody could be like Jack H. Jacobs.
