"I think that I've had a very strange life."( J.K. Rowling). Joanne Rowling has indeed had a rather unique life. Rowling may be world famous now, but before Harry Potter she was living a very different life. While writing Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone she was living on welfare while raising her daughter, Jessica, on her own. For a long time she worked hard with trying to get her novel published, but was turned down again and again by publishers. She never gave up, tough, and after a lot of hard work she was able to publish Harry Potter and became an international sensation. She went from barely being able to support herself and her child to being the author of "the best-selling children's book in decades."(World Biography). She didn't stop there, though, and has donated millions to charity. J.K. Rowling is a hero because she is hardworking, generous, and inspirational.

Joanne Rowling is very hardworking. She had an idea for a book that she desperately wanted to publish, and through hard work and determination was able to achieve her goal. As said in a biography of her life, "While raising her young daughter by herself and battling fits of depression, she wrote the drafts of her book in longhand because she could not afford a used typewriter...Rowling finished the book and found the agent Christopher Little.... In 1996, Bloomsbury published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, having picked up Rowling's manuscript after several other publishers rejected it." (Encyclopedia of the word biology). Rowling knew her story on the wizarding boy Harry Potter was worth the effort, and so she worked hard to battle financial problems, depression, and the hardships of raising a child, all while trying to get her book published. She did what not many people have the courage to do. She chased her dreams, and is an inspiration to everyone out there afraid to do so. She didn't get where she is today by slacking off, though. Rowling worked hard to get her life together after her rebellious teenage years, and an example of this is her work ethic in college.  "She wore thick glasses, had a tangle of red hair, studied hard, and was always the first with her hand in the air. She was--as she has often said--a lot like her character Hermione, the studious, rather priggish girl who befriends Harry at Hogwarts." (Harmon). Rowling was hardworking in school, and even served as her own inspiration for Hermione Granger. Her studious habits in school go to show that you have to work hard at everything you do to accomplish great things, and teaches people to try their hardest and participate in all aspects of your life. Joanne Rowling has gone through many hardships in her life, but has surpassed them all through determination and hard work.

Rowling is generous with her time and money. She created a collection of five fables found In Harry Potter titled The Tales of The Beetle and The Bards, and auctioned it off to the highest bidder, and donated the money to charity. According to a biography on her life, "Rowland donated the proceeds to the Children's High Level Group (later called Lumos), a charity providing family-based services to needy children in order to get or keep them out of institutions." (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Rowling cares about others, and does what she can to help those in need. She created an entire book just so she could sell it and give the money to an organization she supports. Rowling's generosity has saved lives, and makes her a hero. She has also committed smaller acts of generosity. In a biography on her life it says, "Rowling found herself clinically depressed and unable to get a job. Living on public assistance, Rowling wrote in local cafes while her daughter slept." (Lovelady). This may not seem like much to most, but Rowling was a single mother who was battling depression and had financial issues, yet she raised her daughter as best as she could. She could have left her daughter in order to pursue her career dreams, but instead she found a middle ground and worked hard in order to write her book and raise her daughter. She was generous to her daughter when she waited until she fell asleep to write, rather to do it when she was awake, so that she could spend time with her daughter. In all, Joanne Rowling is a generous donor to charity as well as a generous mother, and wants to help those who can't help themselves.

Joanne Rowling is inspiring. Rowling managed to go from barely surviving of of welfare to achieving every author's dream. In a biography on her life it says, "Rowling became an international literary sensation in 1999, when the first three installments of her Harry Potter children's book series took over the top three slots of The New York Times best-seller list after achieving similar success in her native United Kingdom." (Bio.com editors) Rowling inspires authors everywhere to pursue their dreams and is a true example of the saying 'anything is possible.' She worked towards her goal and faced many failures, but eventually got to where she is today. Before she became a world famous author, Rowling was struggling with getting by, yet she managed to turn everything around. A biography about her states, "From an unemployed single mother, Rowling enjoyed a dizzying ride to celebrity status. By the time her third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, was released, Harry Potter was appearing on the cover of Time Magazine, and Rowling had to make her peace with being a worldwide celebrity." (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Rowling is inspiring because she has gone through a lot in her life, yet has managed to gain international fame for her great writing. She brought interest in reading to a generation of children, and her success has led to the success of other authors as well. She is a hero who has managed to renew a generation's interest in reading. Rowling is an inspiration for inspiring others to pursue their dreams.

Rowling is hardworking, as proven by her boundless effort to publish her book and raise her child.  She is generous, and has donated millions to charities. She also put her daughter first during a hard time, proving just how generous she is. She is also inspiring, and her difficult journey to get to where she is today has inspired others to try and achieve their goals. Joanne Rowling is a hero, because she has worked hard, been generous with her money and time, and most importantly, she has inspired others. J.K Rowling's hard work, generosity, and inspiration make her a hero.
