Jason Thomas is an ex-marine from Columbus, Ohio. Dropping his daughter off at his mother’s house, he heard about the tragedy in New York. He sped there without a plan. All he knew was, “Someone needed help.” Jason Thomas is a hero to me because when two planes hit the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, he went to the site and found the last two survivors in the wreckage. I think he is a hero because he never gave up. Jason Thomas met another marine, Staff Sgt. David Karnes, and they both believed someone needed saving and they wanted to help anyone they could. Jason didn’t want to get recognized for helping the police, the last survivors; he just wanted to help save someone’s life.

Jason never gave up when it came to finding survivors. He spent hours searching. Jason and David walked around shouting, “United States Marines. If you can hear us, yell or tap.” He walked around until he found someone, which paid off, because he found the last two survivors of the disaster. Jason and David spent thirteen hours waiting for the two men to be pulled away from the twenty feet of rubble.

Jason and David knew someone needed saving. They kept searching and yelling for survivors until they found someone. They found two surviving cops, Will Jimeno and John McLoughlin, twenty feet deep in rubble, and stayed with them for thirteen hours until they were freed from the pile. Jason returned to the site of the debris of the Twin Towers for another two and a half weeks to help out some more.

Jason didn’t want to get recognized for what he did; he just wanted to help. He didn’t tell anyone who he was when he rescued the cops. He disappeared and for years policed wondered who he was. Finally, years after the incident, he went to the movie makers and told them he was Jason Thomas, and he helped save those two men

For all these reasons, to me, Jason is a hero. He searched until he found survivors, he stayed with them until they were freed, thirteen hours later, and he didn’t want to become famous or have attention paid on him; he just wanted to help his country. Many others are heroes of the 9/11 attack. By May 30, 2002, 1.8 million tons of debris was removed from the site. 1,796 or about 69% people in the World Trade Centers were never recovered. Thanks to Jason Thomas and David Karnes two more people were saved.
