Jackie Robinson

by Steven from Lakewood

Jackie Robinson was born January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. He was a top athlete at UCLA were he went to college. Robinson was not only a baseball player; he also excelled in basketball, football and track. Robinson applied for officer candidate school but he was denied because he was black.

Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color line when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Robinson brought an end to racial segregation in professional baseball. He played for ten baseball seasons, and played in six world- series. He was selected to six all star games. Before he retired he was inducted into the baseball hall of Fame in 1962. When Jackie joined Major League Baseball he became rookie of the year in 1947.

Jackie was no fool when it came to playing baseball. His batting average was .311 and that’s really good. He had 1,518 hits and 137 home runs. Jackie must have really tried if he had 734 runs batted in and 197 stolen bases. This makes my hero a hero because any athlete coming from the bottom and making his way up shows he can do whatever he puts his mind to.

People say Jackie was the first black man to play baseball; little did they know there was a black team that played before it was banned in 1887. After Jackie retired from the game he joined the civil rights movement. Jackie broke an unwritten rule that kept black athletes from playing baseball for sixty years until Jackie came and fixed it in the mid 1940s. He wasn’t the first to play baseball.

Jackie Robinson is my hero because he gives me a motivation vibe which keeps me going every day. For a man coming from the bottom and making his way up tells me anyone who sets their mind to it can do it, and race should not stop you. During the civil rights movement, times were hard, jobs were few, but that didn’t stop Jackie from his dream. Many people in society gave up on what they were looking for. Jackie Robinson inspires me because a lot of people look up to him as being a good baseball player but I look up to him because of his life and how he got to his dream.
