I grew up in Seattle listening to my dad and uncle talk on and on about Kurt Cobain. As it seems, they both had known him. My father, whom had only seen him once or twice and didn’t know him very well liked to exaggerate and talk about how they were “the best of friends”, while my uncle, on the other hand had actually known Kurt, and was a distant friend of his. Intrigued by the fact that members in my family had known a celebrity, I looked farther into this Cobain fellow that I was constantly being told about. I didn’t realize at the time that Kurt Cobain was the lead singer of the late Nirvana, a local band for us Seattleites; and a band that I had grown up listening to along with the works of Ozzy Osbourne, Jimmy Page, and Freddy Mercury. I guess growing up in Seattle, where nothing much happened before Nirvana, automatically drove me to listen to Grunge and Rock music more than any other genre. Even as a young girl, I knew I wanted to be able to play the guitar like the people in my favorite bands.

Kurt Cobain was the guitarist and singer for Nirvana. To be a musician, you have to go through many years of tedious work to learn how to play the instrument that you want to play, or vocal lessons. Nirvana broke the mold of Seattle, and came out to be the biggest band of the ‘90s. Cobain did not ever have any vocal lessons, and taught himself to play the guitar. No High School diploma or College degree is needed to be a musician in a band; and the salary was about $20 an hour at the time.

When Kurt was young, his aunt handed him a guitar, and he taught himself how to play. As a kid, Kurt Cobain didn’t fit in anywhere. He wanted to fit in with the “geeks” but they were “not like normal geeks. They were too geeky”. He finally made friends with a gay guy at his high school, and everyone started believing he was gay. He had a “I don’t care” attitude, and that followed him into the music business. Kurt dropped out of High School, and for a long time before Nirvana up and famous, he was living in and out of his friends’ houses, and eventually slept on the streets. To get into music, Kurt tried vigorously to form a band with friends. Soon he met Krist Novoselic, and they formed a few different bands with their friends, before ending it with Dave Grohl; the trio was Nirvana.

Nirvana played a lot of free shows before their big breakout, and also played charity events. Kurt was a generous soul, and cared for children. Nirvana, as a group, taught kids that they can be whatever they want, and don't have to listen to what everyone says. That you can do anything you set your mind to.

Kurt Cobain never graduated High School. Even though I look at Kurt as a hero, I still plan to go to college at the University of Washington, as a back up. Not saying that I will stop playing music. That is one thing in life that I will always love.
