Kimmie Weeks

by Deanna from Roseville

Kimmie Weeks is a very caring person! He helps out so many people in Africa. He builds foundations specifically for children. I don't think I've ever heard of someone this willing to help.

Kimmie Weeks is a survivor of the civil war in his country. He was born in Liberia in 1981. Kimmie Weeks suffered as a child in Africa, but somehow he survived the cholera disease and then the civil war. He didn't want to see other children suffer like he did, so he decided to help African children. By the time Kimmie was fourteen, he had started organizations in West Africa to provide education for thousands of children. He eventually provided health care supplies for children, and put his life on the line for a cause he believed in.

Kimmie Weeks is a very busy person. He not only accomplished all that, but he received the 2007 Golden Brick Award. The Golden Brick Award is an award for people under the age of 25 which honors them for working to change the world. After that, he still had time to get his bachelors degree from Amherst College and also to obtain his master's from the University of Pennsylvania. On top of all that, Kimmie Weeks was honored with the highest honor in Liberia. The President decorated him Knight Grand Commander. All this didn't come easily either. He really worked hard to help children have better lives than he did. And he still is. Currently, he is 28 years old and working as an Executive Director at Youth Action International in New York. Youth Action International is an organization that rebuilds playgrounds and buildings that were destroyed during the Liberian War in Africa.

Learning about Kimmie Weeks is helping me realize how hard it is in Africa and how people really can make a difference in the world. He inspires me so much. Someday, I would like to change the world to make it better like he did. I think it's an amazing career to help children. He watched children die and, instead of just feeling sad, he decided to make a difference to help stop children from dying. Well, he made that difference. He made life better for thousands of children that would've suffered. He's an amazing, caring person.

Having said all that, Kimmie Weeks is my hero. He's done so many incredible things to improve the lives of others. I already feel behind. Kimmie Weeks started building foundations when he was fourteen; I'm almost fourteen and all I'm worried about is impressing boys. He's inspired me so much though, I want to try to make a difference. Not just try, but to do it. I hope he has made as big of an impact on others as he has on me. That's why he is my hero!
