The U.S. Supreme Court Building, Washington, D.C.
by Kay Smith, Artist Laureate of Illinois
The Supreme Court of the United States, composed of a chief justice and eight associate justices, is at the apex of the American judicial system. It is the highest court of law in the land and as such has final authority over all adjudication. In addition to being a court of law, it is a policy making body in the sense that it exerts a commanding influence on the public policies of the United States.
