Stephen King

by Erica from Hobart

My hero is the famous best-selling author Stephen King. He was born in Portland, Maine on September 21, 1947. He has one brother named David King and they spent a lot of time switching between Fort Wayne, Indiana (where his father’s parents and family lived) and Massachusetts and Maine (where his mother and her family lived). Once they were old enough to attend school, the boys, including young Stephen King, moved to Durham, Maine. They were taken care of by their mother alone because one day their father left for the store and never came back.

He graduated high school in the class of 1966 and went to the University of Maine. He wanted to earn his Bachelors of Arts degree in English. He met his wife, Tabitha Spruce, while attending the university. They met because they were both working at the library. He graduated college in 1970 and married a short while later. They were very happy together.

It all seemed like bliss, but Stephen had a hard time financially. He was unable to find work so they lived off of Stephen’s wife’s income. Occasionally he would sell a short story or two but that was after the many rejection letters. He then began to sell books more often. It seemed as if people were starting to enjoy his short stories.

He started teaching in 1971. While there, he kept selling the occasional short stories that weren’t published. Then, one day his wife found a copy of a story that he had been writing, in the garbage. He threw it away in a very disheartened mood. But it struck gold! The book was Carrie and it was published in 1973. It was a best seller. A few years later it became a hit again as a movie.

From then on he had many books published and Stephen King was a household name. Now he is beginning to go blind due to a disease, but he is still writing books that will scare you to death, but we love them. Thank you Stephen King.
