Dave Koz is one of God’s best creatures who was born as David Kozlowski on 27th of March, 1963. He was born and raised in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley.
Dave Koz was graduated with a degree in mass communication from UCLA in 1986 and decided to make a go of becoming a professional musician career in music, afterwards playing for his big brother’s band. After several weeks, he was hired to go on the tour with Bobby Caldwell, invited by his friend Jeff Lorber, who also played keyboard on the same tour. For the rest of 1980, Koz played in some of sessions with several bands and also toured with artists such Richard Marx and played on Arsenio Hall’s late night talk show.
In 1990, Dave Koz finally decided to play solo career. His first album, which is self-titled, succeeded under Capitol Records. It earned high appreciation from critics and his fans. His next album was nominated for both Grammy and NAACP Image Award.
"The music I was creating at that time was a real adventure for me, both musically and sonically, and it was designed around a time in my life where I was looking back and gaining perspective on my earlier successes," says Koz, whose second album, 1993's Lucky Man, achieved gold sales status and launched a multi-media career in the spotlight. "Now it's time to come back to the kind of music I was doing before that period, and I feel it's a natural progression to return to the kind of vibe I created on my first projects. While the idea of the album title was always appealing to me, I had no idea what an amazing dance it would turn out to be."
In 1994, Dave Koz entered radio, a new medium. He hosted his own syndicated radio show called "The Dave Koz Radio Show" (formerly "Personal Notes" ) featuring the latest music and interviews with who's who in the genre.
In 2002, Dave Koz with industry veterans Frank Cody and Hyman Katz started a major label, Rendezvous Entertainment, an independent record company headquartered in Los Angeles. In three short years, Rendezvous has come to dominate the radio and record charts, with recording artists such as Kirk Whalum, Wayman Tisdale, Jonathan Butler, and Marc Antoine leading the way.
Dave Koz often draws comparisons to another well-known saxophonist, David Sanborn. Because the two sound almost alike, he is sometimes called the new born Sanborn. "In a career spanning nearly two decades, Dave Koz has established himself as a world-renowned saxophone player, platinum selling solo recording artist, humanitarian, music-business entrepreneur, radio host and instrumental music advocate."
Dave Koz came out publicly as a gay man on April 2004 in an interview with The Advocate magazine. Later the same year, he was named by People magazine as one of their "50 Hottest Bachelors" in their June issue.
Until late 2005, he already produced 9 solo albums : Dave Koz in 1990, Lucky Man in 1993, Off the Beaten Path in 1996, December Makes Me Feel This Way in 1997, The Dance in 1999, A Smooth Jazz Christmas in 2001, Golden Slumbers : A Father’s Lullaby in 2002, Saxophonic in 2003, and Golden Slumbers : A Father’s Love in 2005.
In his 10th year, in about 2005, Dave Koz had two successful touring entities Dave Koz & Friends: A Smooth Summer Night and Dave Koz & Friends: A Smooth Jazz Christmas, Dave Koz began a new franchise aboard the Holland America Cruise Line, aptly named The Dave Koz & Friends At Sea Cruise. Featuring over 20 artists, including George Duke, Jeffrey Osborne, Patti Austin, and Chris Botii.
In the same year, he also served as Global Ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Besides presenting the world with a new wave of music, he is also dedicated to preserving America’s rich cultural legacy by bringing music back into schools. He also served as National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS).
From the facts we read, Dave Koz really presents the true meaning of being a good instrument player and also a good dedication in this life.
