Lucy Maud Montgomery

A hero means to me someone who is a very special person on Earth. A hero is someone who is creative, organised, daring, true and accomplished. A hero can be a person who saves people, or a person who gets things done that they need to do. A hero can be a person who saves lives, like a firefighter. Firefighters go in and do their duty by saving people and animals that are caught in fires. Animal rescue workers are heroes because they save animals every day, like abandoned dogs, cats and kittens in need and injured wildlife. Another type of hero to me is someone who does risky things they don't think they can do. Someone who cares about you if you are in danger or really scared is a hero. Heroes can be people who just make others happy by what they do, like writers and musicians. There are lots of kinds of heroes. My hero is Lucy Maud Montgomery, a wonderful Canadian writer.

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, November 30, 1874. She was also a teacher and a mother. Maud was raised by her grandparents because her mother died when she was only two. She had no brothers or sisters, and no friends to play with until she was 8. Maud married Ewan MacDonald, a Minister, and moved to Ontario, where she had three sons. One of her sons died at birth. She died in 1942 and was buried in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.

Maud was always writing. She wrote every day. She was full of stories and had a great imagination. She also wrote letters and kept a journal. She and one of her childhood friends wrote letters to each other to be opened in ten years. She had two men pen-friends that she wrote to regularly. One was in Scotland, Mr MacMillan. She was a very energetic genius. Maud was a great student. She completed a two- year teacher training course in only one year. She also studied literature at Dalhousie University for a year.

Maud created 24 books, over 500 short stories, and wrote many poems. She was also a journalist. Her most famous books were about a fiery red-headed orphan named "Anne", who lived in Prince Edward Island at a house called "Green Gables". "Anne" books have sold millions of copies around the world, and have been translated into 17 languages. There have also been plays and musicals and movies and television shows based on the "Anne" books.

Lucy Maud Montgomery is my hero because she wrote so many of my favourite stories. I love her characters and her stories. Her stories have been read and loved by so many people around the world. She is my favourite author.
