Have you ever wondered what it feels like to lose someone so close to you? Have you ever felt that you couldn't do anything and that you were trapped inside a prison that only you were in? Have you ever felt like when everyone else was having the time of their lives, you were feeling down? All those complicated feelings, how can someone live with those questions and feelings stuck in their head? It can give someone a horrible feeling in their tummy just thinking about it. Who can live with these complicated things going on? Who would want to live with these feelings? Lois Lowry did, she chose to live instead of die.
Lois Lowry was born March 20, 1937 in Hawaii
to Robert and Katharine Hammersberg. Her father was an Army dentist and the
family lived all over the world. She attended Brown University, but left after
her sophomore year to get married and raise a family of four children. They
settled in Maine, where she returned to college and received her degree from
the University of Southern Maine. Lois Lowry fulfilled a childhood dream when
she began writing in the mid-1970. Now divorced, she lives in West Cambridge with
her dog, Bandit, and spends weekends in her 19th century farmhouse in New
Hampshire.
Lois Lowry, is the author of over 20 novels and winner of the Newbery Medal twice. This native of Hawaii has become a favorite of both children and young adults. She has tackled a number of topics in her literature including adoption, mental illness, cancer, the Holocaust and futuristic societies. Whatever the theme, Lowry portrays realistic life experiences to her audience.
In her books, Lois Lowry throws her characters and readers into many thought-provoking situations. The contemporary young adult reader is compelled to confront society with all of its imperfections. Lois Lowry told Contemporary Authors that she measures her success as an author by her ability to "help adolescents answer their own questions about life, identity and human relationships."

Her Family
Lois Lowry is now a grandmother. She is now 76 years old! She has a grandchild called Nadine, and two grandsons. She has four children, two girls and two boys. The two girls are called Alix and Kristen; the two boys are called Grey and Benjamin. They are four bright children. Well educated because Lois Lowry educated them. Lois Lowry is committed and brave, she suffered hardships and her stories were not always successful, people in her family died, but she continued to live, continued to write. She only wrote about her family members that died when she felt sad or hurt. All her books are based on a family member.
Her Childhood
As a middle child, Lois Lowry was always on her own, her mother liked her older sister best, and her father liked her younger brother best. That left Lois Lowry on her own, the way she liked it, and she had been very independent
And committed. Her older sister died in 1962 because of cancer, when she was 28 years old. After that, Lois Lowry wrote a book called A Summer To Die, about a girl who loses her older sister. She did not cry all day like some people when their sisters die, instead, she wrote and wrote about the person that died, until she felt better.
Her Writing Career
Lois Lowry was a natural writer, when she was young, she loved to write. Then one day she thought, I should be a famous author someday, so she worked very hard every day. This is what paid off her hard work, she became a award winning and world famous author. She did not give up when she failed, instead, she did the opposite, she worked harder and harder each day, and each day her writing got better and better. She is committed and brave. She wrote a book about her granddaughter, Nadine. So on Nadine's sixteenth birthday, Lois Lowry told a songwriter, Carol Noonan to write a song called Nadine's song for Nadine. It was about, Nadine's father (her son, Grey), who was killed in a plane crash when Nadine was not quite two years old. Lois Lowry is trying to tell Nadine a lot of things about her son Grey. Her son had been greatly honored by a lot of people because he died saving his country.
Lois Lowry faced all these pains throughout her lifetime, she is still up and living today. She is still choosing to live, and that is what makes her a true hero.
