Lisa Leslie

by Kelly from Mission Viejo, California

"I still believe I'm the best player. That's what keeps me going. I'm strong, I'm tough, I still wear my eyeliner."

I first became aware of my hero when she was playing in a WNBA basketball game. When I heard that she averages 21 points a game, and can dunk the ball, at that point I knew she was the best. This attracts me towards this profession because I want to become a basketball player and average 21 points a game. I want to be like she was in high school and score 101 points in sixteen minutes. When you hear about someone doing that in sixteen minutes, it is a miracle. The record is in thirty two minutes, and a woman scored 105 points. If the other team didn't foul out so they only had four players left, Leslie would have set a new record. She could have scored close to 180 points by herself. If I ever got to meet her all I would want to do is play basketball with her. As a child she moved in with her aunt and cousin to further develop her game. That's an inspirational story for kids who want to grow up and become a professional whatever. If you keep your mind set on a goal, then that goal can be accomplished. She has thirteen major titles and a bunch of minor ones. Some of her bigger accomplishments are, Named Female Athlete of the Year by USA Basketball, and she was an all American two years.

Lisa Leslie is a professional basketball player. She plays for the LA Sparks as their starting center, standing at six feet five inches tall. To become a good basketball player you need common sense. Lisa makes roughly one million dollars a year plus endorsements. This is really great for her. Also, she gets money for being sponsors and going to the Olympics. Also, she's been in professional basketball for thirteen years. That's thirteen million dollars plus. Now that she has started a family, she will be retiring after this season to be with her family. But, she may play in the 2012 Olympics. Life is pretty good for Leslie getting paid for what she loves to do: play BASKETBALL!

As a kid you need to be interested in the sport you want to take part in when you're older. You need to practice your hardest all the time. Also, you need to put effort into the thing you're interested in. If you don't push the limit then you'll get nowhere in life, what you want to do, and what you want to be. To be able to do this sport you have to have good grades. The better your grades are the more opportunities you'll have as you get older. Lisa Leslie took paths that she may not have wanted for her family but for the sport. Her mom was always gone, and she moved in with her aunt and cousin. She moved away so she could get a personal one on one coach and practice all the time. It ended up paying off because she is now a famous basketball player and one of the best ever in the WNBA.

My personal career hero helps others by telling people to never give up and always push past your limit. She also has allowed people to view all the great accomplishments she has done. A big one is she has set the bar for what basketball really is. It's not about if you win or lose, it's about how you play the game.

A high school goal is to become like Lisa Leslie and to practice every day and do whatever it takes to play basketball. Even if you have to move or transfer schools, you would do whatever it takes, because all you want to do is play basketball. As a college goal you would try to get a basketball scholarship and play basketball every day in college. You would want to get into a school that is very good at basketball, like the University of Tennessee or USC. If you did really well and were a team player, you would eventually become a professional basketball player. A life goal would be to play for the L.A. Sparks and to become one of their best guards. Finally, after ten years or something, you would retire and be with your family, just like the greatest player ever to play in the WNBA did. Lisa Leslie is my hero.
