Lionel Andres Messi was born on June 24, 1987 in the state of Rosario, Argentina. He is famous because he is one of the best soccer players and he inspires many people around the world. People admire him because they love soccer, and kids and boys want to be just like him because of his talents on the soccer field.

When Messi was a boy he started playing soccer and joined the youth team of Newell's Old Boys in 1995. When Messi was 13, he and his family moved to Barcelona and he started playing for FC Barcelona for their under 14 team. On the junior team Messi scored 21 goals in 14 games. When he was 16 he got a chance to play for FC Barcelona in a friendly match. In 2004-05 he was the youngest official soccer player in the Spanish la liga and the youngest to score a goal. He was 17 years old. Even though he was short at 5'7" and not very big at 148 pounds, he was a strong, healthy, well balanced left footer. Messi was also good at passing and at dribbling through defense and other players. Messi started getting better and better each year.

In 2005 Messi was an important member of several teams representing Argentina. He played for Argentina on their FIFA World Youth Championship squad. He played for Argentina in the 2006 World Cup, and he scored two goals in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, where Argentina won the gold medal.

In 2008 Messi was one of the most talented players in the world, coming in second place to Cristiono Ronaldo who was voted FIFA World Player of the Year. In the 2008-09 season FC Barcelona won three titles in one season. The team won the "the Copa Del Rey," "La Liga Championship," and the Champions League title. Messi scored 38 goals during that amazing season. He got first place in the FIFA World Player of the Year voting, beating Ronaldo by a very wide margin.

In 2009-10 Barcelona repeated as champions of La Liga and he received the Golden Shoe award. He was also named the 2010 World Player of the Year.
