Liya

The person I chose to be my hero is Liya Kebede. Liya was born on January 3, 1978, and was raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She is a hero because she is part of the World Health Organization, known as WHO. They nominated Liya to be the Goodwill Ambassador. Kebede is a very generous and giving woman to her culture. Liya has spent a couple of years in Ethiopia helping women and children of all ages with health and schooling. She is my hero because she made me realize, no matter how old you are, you can make a difference helping around the world.

Liya was a very beautiful and smart woman. A film director spotted her in France while she was modeling. She attended school in France at the French Lycee. She was one of the few African-American women to go to France for modeling and for schooling. In her modeling career she has been on many magazine covers such as: Vogue, Flair, Harpers & Queens, V magazine. After finishing her studies in France, she moved to New York City, where she resides today. Liya is now the new face of Estee Lauder. Liya is one of the few African-American women to ever become a model.

Liya is very talented. She can speak French, English and Amharic. On March 7, 2005, Liya was appointed to be the Goodwill ambassador of the World Health Organization. Doing this, Liya has helped women with pregnancy, newborns and other health problems. Since she has been part of this organization, she has helped raised nearly $12,000 U.S. dollars. In 2007, she was appointed to be the Goodwill Ambassador for another two years. Kebede has been one of the greatest women that the organization could have ever had. She has helped thousands of women in Africa and Ethiopia with newborns, maternal and child health.

Liya has inspired many people around the world, and is living happily in New York City with her husband, Kassy Kebede, and their two children: son Suhul, and daughter Raee. She has been on many magazine covers and talk shows since she has been a model and a leader. Liya Kebede is a very successful African-American woman, and has many challenges and life goals she would like to pursue in the next few years. Through the World Health Organization, she has made a difference by helping people live their daily lives around the world.
