The Lucky Six
It was a normal morning for the Ladder Six Fire Crew on September 11, 2001, until they got the call.
Mike Meldrum, a twenty year old veteran, and Sal D’ Agostino who is the son of a retired fireman, and had been in the company for five years himself, are part of Ladder Six. Along with these two came four more heroic men: Tommy Falco who had been a firemen for eighteen years, Matt Komorowski who had twelve years of experience as a firefighter, Bill Butler who had been with the department for seven years, and is also known to be the company’s strongest man, and lastly Captain Jonas who is “The first man into a fire, and the last man out.”
These six courageous and selfless men saved the life of Josephine Harris, an elderly woman on the seventy-third floor of the north tower.
The members of Ladder Six Fire Crew were among the first firemen to the scene. They raced up ninety-three floors with 110 pounds of gear. As they were racing up to save people, everyone else was rushing down for their lives, but these men were risking their lives to save others.
After the south tower fell, police and firemen were called to evacuate immediately, but the Ladder Six Fire Crew was still on the twenty-first floor.
These six found Josephine Harrison on the fourth floor too tired to go anymore. The tower started collapsing and Ladder Six and Josephine Harris were still inside. Everything started shaking, big booms were heard, people were screaming and scared for their lives, and gusts of wind were tearing apart the wall, ripping drywall off. The gusts of wind were knocking them down, at this point they were almost certain they were going to die, but they managed to carry Josephine Harris out safely.
