Dr. Martin Cooper

by Berlove from Ansonia

Did you know that Dr. Martin Cooper invented something that almost everyone has and it comes in different colors, shapes, sizes, and forms? He invented the cell phone!!! I would like to meet my hero Dr. Martin Cooper. I have so many questions to ask like: “What inspired your idea?” or “How many trials did you need to make it perfect?” Also many people have cell phones and I wonder how he feels about his invention being modified. Nowadays there are so many new features like with a touch screen and text pad. Another reason is I would really want to know about his background. Did he want to be a scientist as he was growing up? When did he realize his dream to be an inventor? So that is why I would like to meet Dr. Martin Cooper.

Dr. Martin Cooper was born on December 26, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute in 1950 and 1957. He worked for Motorola but worked in the Navy for 4 years working on destroyers and submarines. He also worked for another company making portable products like hand radios for police in 1967. He began working on Motorola’s cellular research project and developed the 3lb prototype from his base in Washington. He was working in consultation with FFC, and against competition and decided to come to New York to promote technology. On his way to a press conference, he made a wireless call to his rival Dr. Joe Engel, the research director at AT&T Bell lab on April 13, 1973. He was able to tap into people’s need to talk freely to each other. He believed that consumers' freedom to talk was inhibited by the land line telephone. He also knew that by researching and developing the use of the wireless phone there would be an unleashing of those strong communication desires. The phone invention propelled his co-founding and managing of Array Cam, a company that uses core adaptive antenna technology to increase the captivity and coverage of cellular systems. This company under the leadership of Dr. Cooper used technology to make the internet more personal.

My hero displays many things but here are the main 2 characteristics that make him a hero. My hero displays determination. I think this because he went to school to become what he wanted to be and he ended up inventing the cell phone. He couldn’t have gotten where he did if he didn’t work hard. He couldn’t have done what he has and we wouldn’t have cell phones today. Another thing my hero displays is inspiration. I think this because a lot of kids want to go into a great career as being a scientist. If they want to be a scientist they must have a hero or an interest in an invention and I think Dr. Martin Cooper would be a great hero and inspiration because I chose him to be my hero. Everyone has a hero whether it’s a star, actor, singer, or a regular everyday person. They all inspire you to do wonderful things.

Dr. Martin Cooper is a hero to me. I think this is because I can relate to his invention because I use a cell phone almost everyday. One time I used a cell phone when I needed to call my mother when I went to New Jersey without her for the first time. I went for Thanksgiving and spent 5 days with my uncles and cousins. Another reason he’s a hero to me is cell phones help people in many ways, with adding texting, internet, and other things because you don’t want to be carrying everything around when it could be in a phone that fits in your pocket. Also the cell phone invention has helped people to multi-task. The original phone was great but Dr. Martin Cooper has found a new way to make it even better.

Dr. Martin Cooper is a great inventor. I think this is because he is an inspiration to young kids because a lot of kids want to be an inventor. Dr. Martin Cooper seems to have an amazing scientific ability and I couldn’t imagine my life without his creation! So that’s why I chose Dr. Martin Cooper to be my hero.
