Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn (balletdancersguide.com) |
My hero is Margot Fonteyn. She was born Margaret Hookham on May 18, 1919 in Reigate, Surrey. She had an English father and an Irish mother of Brazilian ancestry. Early in her career, Margaret transformed Fontes (her mother's maiden name) into Fonteyn and Margaret into Margot, which became her stage name.
When she was young her mother signed her and her brother up for ballet classes. She joined the Vic-Wells Ballet School, and later transferred to the Vic-Wells Ballet. She rose very quickly through the ranks of the company and by 1939 had performed in many lead roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, and Sleeping Beauty. She was then appointed Prima Ballerina. In the 1940s, she and Robert Helpmann formed a very successful dance partnership, and they toured together for several years. She was a popular classical ballet dancer. She was awarded a DBE (made a dame). in 1956 at the age of 37! In 1979 she received from the Royal Ballet in England the title "prima ballerina assoluta"!
Margot has inspired many artists to fulfill their dreams. She shows young artists they can become something by working towards what they want. She was amazing and when she danced she spoke to the people watching her. Margot died On 21 February, 1991 in a hospital in Panama City, Panama, she died. She had cancer.

I chose Margot Fonteyn because she was a very admirable ballet dancer. Ballet is not an easy form of dance, and she was excellent at what she did. She was definitely a Prima Ballerina! She was very successful, and her dancing brought pleasure to many. Her dancing was very breathtaking and gave younger dancers someone to look up to! I strongly admire her and would love to pursue a career as great as hers.
Margaret Hookham (Margot Fonteyn) was a great artist, and moved many who watched her. She brought new things to the art of dance! She is always remembered for her amazing talent and gracefulness as a prima ballerina!
