Mohandas Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India on October 2, 1809. His parents were Karamchand and Putliba. His mother was very religious and Gandhi loved her very much. School was painful for Gandhi, because of his looks and size. He was very small for his age and his ears stuck out. He ran to school every morning, and made it just in time to class. At the end of the day he would run home, hoping he would not be seen.

When Gandhi was 12, he went to high school. All the classes were in English, he had trouble with the ancient Hindu religion. After hearing that Persian was easier he snuck in to that class to learn. When he was only 13, Gandhi married Kasturba. It was an arranged marriage by both families. His brothers were married at the same time to save the family money.
When he was finishing high school, Gandhi's family hoped he would follow his father. He went to college in England, to become a lawyer. It was a family advisor who told Gandhi to go to college in England. When he was in England he learned more about his religion and others. His mother died two weeks before he got home to India in 1891. His family did not tell him because he was doing exams, and they wanted him to do well.

He was offered a job in South Africa to work on a large case in 1893. He took the job because his family needed the money. This is where he first started to experience not being treated well because of his color, and religion. Gandhi used the newspaper to show people how badly people were being treated. He had a paid first class ticket on a train and was thrown off for refusing to go to a third class seat.
Gandhi and Kasturba did many protests in India for civil rights for Indians. Gandhi went to jail because of his view that no matter what color you are everyone should be treated the same. In 1944 Kasturba died in prison. In 1948 Gandhi was assassinated because of how he cared for everyone, no matter what color they were or what they believed in. Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. also fought for civil rights and followed Gandhi's teaching. Today Gandhi is a symbol of peace, kindness, strength and faith.
